Wait what's the bet, that games will require windows 8 only in 2013 or that windows 8 will be released by 2013? I would take the latter bet for sure.

    Just so we're clear:

Within the next two years MS will release a new version of Windows that will be the only way to run the newest version of directx. Winner gets three month reserve slot in game of choice.

If this is correct, then I'll take that bet.

OEM copies of Win7 are only $100 from Newegg. Only difference from OEM vs Retail is you get a couple hours of free technical support. The common misconception is that Win7 requires massive amounts of resources. It runs fine on my kids' PCs, which aren't the greatest. Sempron processors, onboard video & audio, 2 gigs of RAM. They're definitely not anywhere close to high end.

Will a lot of people need to upgrade? Sure. The Battlefield series has never been a 'casual' gamers game. It's always been pushing the limits of hardware. Most folks had to upgrade when BF2 came out, and again when 2142 came out. Sure, you can run both on budget-level systems now, but at the time of their release they definitely taxed your system. I remember folks not being able to play on 64-player servers for both BF2 and 2142 due to having older systems. Same thing happened with BC2. Folks had systems that ran BF2/2142 fine maxxed out but couldn't even play BC2 on low settings. It's the nature of the beast. PC Gamers are a different breed. The vast majority time their upgrades around the releases of games they play. This will be no different.
Oem version isn't transferable to another computer, while retail is. Huge difference.

What on earth are you talking about? You have a legitimate key, and as long as its installed on only 1 computer, its fine. It doesnt matter WHICH computer (or instance) just as long as its 1.

Actually, I heard that the beta for windows 8 would be later this year with retail being pushed middle 2012.

Actually, everything I've read points to the contrary. OEM license is tied to the motherboard of the PC. You can upgrade every other part, but not the motherboard. It's crap, but that's the system put in place by MS. If the computer needs a new motherboard, I'd suggest selling the PC as is with the OEM license and start from fresh parts and buy a retail license.

You may not even need to start from scratch with a new mobo. You'd be surprised what a new video card and power supply can do for a PC, even if the motherboard and CPU are fairly crap. I have a friend that runs a 3 year old Dell PC and he put in a Radeon 5870 and new power supply and he is able to run BC2 at max settings.

    Windows 7 Student Discount
Use that if you're a student.

There's also an even cheaper one if you just need to upgrade.
