It's not the question of immigration that's important. Any person who wants to come to the United States legally is someone whom I will welcome with open arms. I'll see about helping them make themselves at home and establishing for themselves a new life in America. And I hope that one day they too will be able to call themselves Americans.
Those who chose the break the law, however, are deserving of immediate deportation. This is a nation built upon a legal code. We all must follow this code to the letter. No exceptions (unless you're rich, powerful, or known someone who is either or both of those). Furthermore, you being a non-American, let alone someone who is here illegally, shouldn't be afforded the same rights and privileges as a citizen, nor should they be held in higher status over a citizen in any situation.
If those reasons alone are not enough to justify cracking down on illegal immigrants, then consider this fact: the American legal system operates on legal precedents. For those who don't know, this means that court rulings from previous cases can be used as justification for one's case in future cases. So, by granting them amnesty (meaning that they are absolved of all crimes), you are setting a precedent. This means that all future immigrants won't have to bother with entering legally and enduring the long naturalization process. They can instead just hop the border and claim that they are here legally as per the precedent.
Additionally, as screwed up as the American legal system can be at times, there is another worse possibility stemming from the creation of such a precedent. From time to time, loopholes appear in the system that convicts can use to get through. By granting amnesty to people who have broken the law, one who is accused of a crime can say that "hey, these people broke the law and were given amnesty, that should be able to work for me too." And some idiot judge will eventually agree to that, setting both a felon free and creating another precedent.
Think about it, people.
