downloading tf2 right now off steam, what does a noob need to now before joining this cell shaded jazz?

Uh sample each class till you find something you like then focus on that class and perfect it. Then when your bored do the same for another class and on down the list until you can play anything at anytime. For each map and each situation calls for certain tactics. Also learn how to rocket jump with the soldier and stickybomb jump with the demo. Two very useful tactics.

Also check out some of the articles that have been written for TF2, some good ones are out there.
