Less DayZ, more general ARMA2 question

DayZ looks neat but the PvP aspect turns me off. I like co-op vs AI much better.

I have had ARMA2 for a while and tried coop with a friend. At first we had issues getting started but finally wWe got through the first mission. However we never tried playing again. We both agree it is time to make another attempt and are both thinking of getting the game for our 12/13 year olds and trying Chernarus Apocalypse 4 player coop.

    So my questions are...
Some mods like Dayz require Combined Operations. Everything I read that is Arma2 + Arma2 Operation Arrowhead. So If I already have Arma2 can I just buy ARMA2:OA and be good to go if we wanted to try that?

For anyone that has done ARMA2 co-op is there any mods/after market patches we should look into? I was at Armaholic and there is tons of info but it is a mess to find stuff. No beginners guide for idiots (unless you are doing DayZ)

Re: Less DayZ, more general ARMA2 question

Glitch, our DayZ group is rather sizable now and i have noticed that we roll in two groups almost every night. One group goes looking for PvP trouble and the other goes PvE and loots for the guys that bite it in PvP. Its a pretty cool system as everyone gets to play with friends while playing the way they want.

So with that said, i wouldn't let the PvP aspect of it turn you off. You can PvE all you want and occasionally you will have to PvP, or you can go looking for it!

In regards to Operation Arrowhead, i believe that is all you will need since you already have ArmA II. I did combined operations because i did not have ArmA II to begin with and one big download seemed easier than 2. Also the British reinforcements and private military expansion pack improve the textures on some of the skins for players and i believe some guns as well. Other than that they add nothing to the game.

Almost all PvP turns me off. Games like Bf3 that are team orientated are different. DayZ PvP is just dicking with other people. To me it is just organized griefing and if you play you are consenting to being griefed. Not my idea of a good time really. I know you all hear enjoy that, would never dream of trying to convince anyone to change their view to mine. I am probably in the minority as gamers go. It is just how I feel.

Add to that I don't care for total Sandbox environments. I want to play objective based games. I don't line Minecraft for the same reason (although i hear that is changing they added bosses etc)

I have zero interest in DayZ. Same for my friend. (My step son very well might try it out.) However Chernarus Apocalypse looked interesting. Most likely will will not even play that all that often and stick to the non zombie Co-op maps.

Well searching answered part of my questions...

To be clear, all "CO" means is that you have both ArmA2 and ArmA2: Operation Arrowhead. There's no "Combined Operations" game/exe/program or anything. You either run ArmA2 on it's own, OA on it's own or OA with A2 as a mod (which is "CO").

Well you wont get any grief from me. Nor will i try to convince you that " DayZ is the awesomest game ever", you have a pretty good grasp of what the game can entail. To each their own bro!

Yes (and I mentioned it in 2 posts above lol) that is what got me thinking of playing again. However it is only 1 mission that takes about 1-2 hours. So considering other things too.

It does look very interesting. Love the idea of starting "classes" with limited loadout/ammo forcing you to scrounge up stuff. Would love to see a similar non-zombie idea too if I could find one.

Try searching on multiplayer browser for Domination or Insurgency missions, those are mostly PvE with the possibility of limited PvP on Insurgency. If you do you'll find that a lot of the more popular ones require the ACE mod package(I recommend using sixupdater to download it), but try out a few of the vanilla servers to see if that's more your style.
