So I'm thinking of buying...but...
Ok, I have been hoping around from game to game, trying to find something that is fun again. DICE ruined Battlefield, CSGO is fun, but not all the time. L4D is great with the right people, but I need something that I can just hop on, and you know...play....
So I was looking into DayZ....but I have some questions I cant seem to find straight answers to.
1. Is it worth buying now? I would need Combined operations, since I do not have ArmaII.
2. Is it still in Alpha? Is it all buggy?
3. Should I wait for standalone version? When is that coming out?
4. Do we have a solid base of TPGers that play?

Obviously, just hop on our Warz server, oh wait......
DayZ is not really a hop on and Play sorta game. Some of us have been playing since Feb-March. I've had Arma2 for a long time. It's tricky. A Mil-Sim. Technical is the game, Teamplay, and Organized Teamplay with self restraint will go a long way. Dicking around will get you killed, easily. It's still in Alpha, but we love it so much we just had to put the TPG logo on it. Gearing up to Full Kit might take you a while especially on Chernarus.
Recently some of us played in an Event, kinda reminiscent of the old BF2 events, on another server. It was really awesome to get back into a huge community event. It's also garnered a lot of attention, for that Community. I'd say Buy Arma2:OA just to play in those events. With that Purchase Dayz Mod is free, as well as a new Gem Wasteland.Last edited by SmokenScion; 12-12-12 at 05:03 PM.

Let me explain what I mean by "Play" I dont mean a game that I dont take seriouslly and fuck around in. I'm looking for the opposite as a matter of fact. I need a game I can hope on, and really "Play" is what I meant. A game that takes teamwork, skill, thought, etc...
Can you answer my other questions? When does the standalone come out? Should I wait for it? I read something like late 2012 early 2013

Software....could be on time, could be Duke Nukem 3d 2. That date is the most recent. Buggy, Yes, but something that will possibly get fixed, unlike EA.
Big difference, here is this is a Mod going to Game. This Mod actually increased the total arma2 sales Ever, by moar than 1200%.
If anything you should Purchase Arma2 to make a statement. And to get some SEriously addicting Blow BF3 out of the water Heart pounding foot stomping gay old time with TPG fun.

I got Arma 2 CO for $15 from Amazon. I bet you spend more than that on donuts in a week.

It is still in Alpha and there are some bugs still in the game. The thing is, that they are still supporting the mod and fixing bugs all the time. Even after the stand alone game is released, they said that they are going to still support the mod and probably use it for a testing ground for implementing new features for the stand alone. You are assuming right that the release will be late '12, early '13. I would say go ahead and buy it now because you can get it pretty cheap at the moment (even on steam). You will also have access to other mods for Arma 2 (not to mention the game itself) and most of them are pretty well done.
