• Love It: Arma 3

Alphas are generally bug-ridden unpolished turds. They’re usually missing a slew of features, some of which can be devastatingly detrimental to the experience, and can sour you on the game forever. I don’t know that I have ever loved an alpha of a game. But I love Arma 3.

What makes this one different? Well, for one it doesn’t feel like a turd. It’s still missing features and a good coat of polish, but what is in the game now is very playable and well done. The game is beautiful, and the missions in the showcases are well designed and great to play through. Arma 2 felt like a kludge to me, and the engine feels much improved in the new iteration. The game runs smoother, looks better, and just doesn’t feel as clunky anymore. If you’ve tried like me to get into Day Z or Wasteland, or any other number of Arma 2 mods and couldn't for the same reason, then you may be surprised by Arma 3.

Speaking of mods, the heart of Arma games is a thriving mod community, and Arma 3 will be no different as Bohemia Interactive intends to further cultivate community created content. Straight from the horse's (or rather, Jay Crowe's, Co-Creative Director on Arma 3) mouth:

“The Arma 3 Alpha is a big milestone in the project's development. Testing early and often puts us on the right track towards improving performance, stability and delivering on our goal of creating a robust final release. It's also a big opportunity to get the game in the hands of our passionate community, which enables them to start work on their own creations, tailored to the fourth generation of the Real Virtuality engine.”

Expect to see all of your favorite mods from Arma 2 migrate over, and hopefully some cool new ones.

TeamPlayerGaming.com operates an Arma 3 Wasteland server – currently the highest ranked server in the world according to GameTracker. Wasteland feels a lot like playing BF2, where players create the points of conflict rather than rallying around flags. Objectives spawn every few minutes and encourage teams to be active. Join us on the server and enjoy the type of Arma experience you’ve been missing.

For the current price of $32.99 on Steam, you can’t go wrong with this one and you help to support the development of what is sure to be a runaway hit. You can follow the progress of the alpha here.
