CSGO <------ the game that killed Counterstrike...
CSGO.... the game that killed counterstrike.... the end!
Before Go was released, we pretty much had both CSS servers rocking and rolling all the time.... and then GO came...
people stopped playing css and played GO for a lil while... and then everyone stopped playing counter strike all together.... shit really sucks for me since i don't like GO at all.... and never really liked any of the new games that have come out the last couple of years....
Wheres all our CSS players? Everyone quit? Shit, TPG doesn't even run a server anymore for css... wheres everyone that played before GO came out.... ?
Can we get a hosted server back if theres enough people wanting to play?
ALL I WANT TO DO IS PLAY SOME SOURCE.... WHO'S WITH ME?

A lot of it has to do with this.
Then a small number of former TPG CSS player's still play Source (but less than TPG people that play GO). But GO does get going, it is just later and less often.
As to general population, about the same number of people play a version of CS, just now split in thirds instead of halves.Last edited by Madmax (Grape); 06-08-13 at 08:14 PM.
We can do better.

Certainly on TPG, CSGO has drastically lowered the amount of play. That happens though; games move on, communities evolve or fracture. There are still many many people that play (my clan boasts the US's busiest 20 or less GO pub) and it's a shame that TPG is less popular but I'm always glad to play here and GO has easily replaced 1.6 as my favorite (never really liked Source that much.)

As Max said...each new iteration of cs fragments the population even more. I prefer source over go in a major way...but I have no desire at all to play anywhere but TPG. TPG is the only reason I play any version of cs still. I think that fragmentation, along with matchmaking and our own early server issues with CS:GO all contributed to a shrinking population here. That and real life and dota 2 invading many of the long time, upstanding source players. I'm confident that we'll rebuild, it just may take awhile.

Re: CSGO <------ the game that killed Counterstrike...
Pretty much what every one said, server issues (lag, map downloads/broken maps, different versions of maps, workshop etc...), Dota 2, Arma 3, Borderlands 2.....I see plenty of people from the Source servers that play these games or another game over CS:GO. I see more people on my friends list from TPG playing other games over CS:GO Match Making as well. A few do actually MM, ESEA, or Leetway pug.
Like dmaster said, people have tried to prime source with little to no success, the activity there was worse than the GO servers which is why they are gone. People need to realize GO is still counter-strike, similar strats and playstyle, same original/official maps. Obviously the game mechanics are a bit different, but that's just something people have to get used to and learn (like not being able to hold mouse 1 and spray down an entire rush like in source), just takes more skill now. Also, Valve is taking input from both the 1.6 and source communities, mostly the pros, which is bringing both communities together quite well. The competitive side of 1.6 and Source is basically dead in North America, GO has taken over.
Although TPG is a competitive community, we will always be seen as a casual pub to those who haven't played on our servers before, making it hard to attract people playing in leagues competitively or those who strictly match make. One of the reasons for this is because rather than the standard 5v5 competitive matches/pugs that are played everywhere we host 11v11 games and our servers show up in the public server list along with hundreds of other servers.
In order to have both GO servers going like we did in source , we need the "source" players who moved on to other games upon the release of GO to embrace the game and help populate the servers. Too many players that were active in source do not even touch GO. What happened to the CS:S resident clans? I still see a few members from some of the clans being active, but it is rare to see someone from say tcz or RS in the GO servers..Too many people have moved to different games, and it is hard to attract new regulars to fill in the gaps due to MM and leagues. It was amazing to see the source server(s) full from 5pm until 4-5am at times, now it is a miracle to make it to 12-1am or further on 1 of the GO server =/.

I am definitely one of the Source regulars that hasn't played GO that much. When I first played it, I hated it. The gun mechanics were the main problem. Kaido hit it on the spot. This game takes some getting used to. Spraying is the worst thing you can do in CS:GO and soooo many Source players used that technique to be good at the game, myself included.
GO is all about burst fire in my opinion. After playing here and there I have finally got used to the mechanics of the game. Now all I have to do is try to put time aside to play the game instead of L4D2, BL2, Arma2, BF3, and even Arma3. The community is what made Source so enjoyable and that is where the problem occurs. We have new blood in the servers and new regulars that many old players don't even know. For example when you see Vafa playing GO, you will see the most amount of TPG regulars on the server.
I'll try to hop on more often. To those that dislike the game, give it time. Play GunGame a lot and get used to the gun mechanics. The game is exactly the same as Source once you relearn how to use the guns.

[QUOTE=Kaido;2014423 Borderlands 2[/QUOTE]
Really? I get that a handful of people may play, but idk if BL2 is taking away from GO. Unless there's been a huge influx of BL2 people that I don't know about. If that's the case then wow, good for Gearbox.

Didn't say borderlands 2 was their new main game, but what I meant was that people gave up on GO because the game wasn't source and was too hard for them, so they were putting time into the new games coming out or the other games mentioned in this. Blonde is the perfect example, he stopped playing the game very early, but I have seen him attempt to play it more recently.
