Wow. That's a sysadmin version of

God grant me the power to change the things I can, the serenity to accept the things I can't, and the wisdom to know the difference.

    And thats.....just silly.

It's in context, since your context is "if you put in the time and effort, linux works better".

And like I've had to say 10 times now.....we put in the time, and the effort.....and even then, you have to come to teh realization that some parts of the software and OS are out of your control. And then you have to make decisions on how to avoid problems out of your control.
There's a world of difference between me implying something and you inferring it. I didn't say that linux worked better at any point. I said if you put in some time and effort you could get it to work, specifically for Source. I also said that it was far from ideal. I'm not some linux zealot in here proclaiming Linus Torvalds as God and Bill Gates as Satan.

I don't have anything against the way that TTP runs the servers. I didn't suggest that anyone was lazy, unskilled, incapable, or disinterested.

I agreed with a lot of what you said, but disagreed that it was always right for everyone. For you to proclaim that since windows is the best option for TTP it's the best option for everyone, after bashing on others for their anecdotal evidence, is hypocritical. I'm a sysadmin by trade. Linux has been incredibly useful for lots of applications. I know that it's not always the right choice, and I conceded that. I use whichever OS fits my needs with the least amount of hassle and frustration. Whether that OS is windows, linux, macos, bsd, doesn't matter as long as it gets the job done, and well. And I'm not a hippie, dammit.

I'm glad that the servers are running smooth and well supported. I frankly don't care what OS they're running.

    Re: XP or Linux?

I made it clear, for our web stuff, windows is a different story altogether.

But for games and gameservers.......windows is not the dominant OS. that's the point, that's my argument, that's the issue.

Saying "well it can be done" is rhetorical and irrelevant. We could run our servers on OS/X if we had to......but that doesn't mean it's an option.

*laugh* I almost think I'd offer beer to the first admin team who can reliably get an OS-X server running a Source or EA game. That'd be some serious geek cred

I'm clueless about OS-X. Isn't it a POSIX compliant OS? If so, wouldn't it be within a realm of possibility for a talented few to port from Linux to OS-X? Providing of course that they have access to the source code...that's an issue. Never mind.

    Re: XP or Linux?

Sure, it's quite possible for all the reasons stated. But it'd be a major pain in the ass to get it to run reliably.

Remember, it might have begun life as BSD, but soon thereafter it was twisted by dark and fell magics in the stronghold of Dark Lord Jobs

Whee! I'm browsing TTP through the Konqueror browser in Kubuntu while it is still installing and formatting my disks.

    This is easy like pie.
