Any risk in having open NAT?

As how the topic of the thread stated, will there be any risks in having open NAT? I wanted to know this before resetting from strict nat to open nat. I understand that having open NAT will greatly allow me able to play with larger groups of people, and also helps to reduce the issues of lag, host problems, failed connections, and disconnection from games. But I really don't want to risk the dangers of other things in exchange for gaming.

    Thanks in advance!

Edit: Console I play on is Xbox 360.
    I'm usually available on weekends.

No no no. Opening your nat wont have an adverse effect on your router or networking. Its only good things to have open nat.

My comments to this revolve around what else is on the network. Having an open nat with an xbox/ps3 shouldn't be a problem.

You might even want to lookup placing the console in a DMZ.

I would however be cautious of how you set up this open nat on a network, such as if you have PC's without software firewalls attached. I'd advise either googling the ports used specifically for your console/game and opening those through the router to a statically assigned IP address of the console.

You could also look at an easier option of enabling uPNP, but be aware that if something else on your network has been compromised e.g. a pc with scumware, it might open up ports that you'd otherwise not want.

Am personally not concerned about the security of the consoles - not heard of any security risks on the console end of things (so dmz'ing your console is good), just to keep an eye on the security of PC's attached to the same router :-)
