mid range:
M4-5 shot bursts at head, pulling down on the 6th shot if I need to spray.
AK-4 shot bursts at head, pulling down on the 5th shot if I need to spray.

Long range:
M4-4 shot bursts at head, pull down on the 5th shot. Don't spray.
AK-Switch between 2 shot bursts and clicking out 3 shots. All of them aimed at the head.

Close range:
M4-Spray at head
AK-Spray at neck

There are a few exceptions to this... things like long distance shotty, or unscoped snipers ect... but in general, always always always aim at head level even when noone is around. That way if someone pops out, you just press fire, and if you are not already looking at them, it is a lot easier to pan only horizontally than also vertically for that first flick.

This is the number one thing about aiming that I always tell anyone new to the game. When I first started playing I would aim at the floor about 20 ft ahead of me and I did terrible. As soon as I started aiming at head level I did way better.

A good map to get used to this is Office. Keep your crosshair at the top of the filing cabinets at all times, and you will rack up the kills.
