Re: CS:GO (Global Operation)
New game built on aged concept. With some semblance of a target audience. Lets see how this goes --
1) Excitement mixed with skeptical players.
2) Testers and followers promoting it's merits
3) Huge HooRah right before release
4) A giant flood of bitching upon release.
5) An influx of 'try out' players
^^ this is basically a given if a game is marketed decently.
From here it goes one of the following (keep in mind this applies to games built off existing concepts)
1) Well supported with enough engine/play/enhancements to merit continued growth. Changes the genre, and not too demanding (or is highly scalable) as to prevent alienating the current hardware average. Results in a rapid phasing out of the old market via sheer improvements (rare, think WoW [and yes they mangled and gutted this genre] ).
2) Cloned enhancement with a marketing model to back it up. Nothing too much to say except 'It's the same just better' (Source did this somewhat).
3) Well supported, too advanced engine for some to run. Successful but creates a gap in the markets of old and new. Both continue to strive basically in parallel. (Source/EQ2 did this)
4) Lacking some of the above, generates a scattered following and never reaches true fruition. (most common result of most releases)
5) A next generation game made by the successful label which brought this genre to the forefront to begin with (often disappointing, successful example HoMM3) -- and loosely GoW
Obviously I am a PC gamer, but I often find myself completely disappointed by FPS releases. BF2 was probably the last game, IMHO, that Did a good mix of #1,2,&5. Every time I hear about a new CSS like game I raise an eyebrow. It is difficult at best to even attempt to penetrate this market as it is. You have to stick to the essentials that make Counter-strike Counter-strike, and somehow bring something worth more than what we already get.
Good luck GO.
