This thread is going in to directions. First off in my opinion it would be nice if rank was displayed and determined more by flag caps. Since it is a mod program and it currently has no way to set the rank to display the way you are suggesting, we will have to live with it untill the stats mod includes this option.
On the other note, involving tactics. DoD is a very fluid environment. Since you respawn everytime you die it is an ever evolving battlefield. I have played many games when the team seems to be working together seamlessly without a lot of communitcation. Advancing together, defending flags and capping them. Other times I have played on a team that even with a lot of communication we lost. I think that if you are defending a flag then you have to weigh all the options, mostly I will run in gun blazing or a nade primed to stop it from being captured. Even if I die they will have to continue standing there since I interupted their cap. Often that gives other teammates time to get there and keep it from being captured as well. This is particularly important if it is a flag that requires two or more people to cap it. However when it comes to single player flags I will consider the enemies strength and position of my team before I rush in to stop it.
We have a lot of players on the server that all have differant techniques and ways they are effective. This game needs a combination of rushers and defenders, aggressive and sneaky. When you as a player can be good at all of these tactics then the better the team as a whole is. I would challenge any player to get out of the box, your "safe zone" and try to get good at as much experience at all types of tactics and strategy. It wil make you a more versatile player and thus more a more valuable team member.

When you defend a flag, it counts towards your flag capture amount. Psycho stats logs this information, however the in game stats and rankings dont take these into consideration (althought they do take kdr into consideration)

Yeah....I think a lot of people are just assuming that the in-game stats (mani-stats when you type "rank" or statsme") are based on psychostats.
Which.....is completely wrong. Mani stats, as we've said 1000+ times, are based on kill-deaths. Not kills/deaths. K-D. Whoever has the biggest spread, regardless of their KD, is going to be ranked #1.

lol Left 4 Dead dose not need to be re-installed at all, I just had the same problem.
Just fixed it then with out having to re-install Steam/Left 4 Dead!
Simple;
Open Steam > Tab My Games > Right Click Left 4 Dead, Properties > Tab Local files..
Then Verify integrity of game cache...
And finally do Defragment cache files.
Once you have done that, restart Steam and launch Left 4 Dead
