I'd say it's a shame you bought this game for singleplayer...missing out on oh...98% of the game I'd say.

You didn't mention you were on the x-box. :\ Tough luck then, you cannot access the single player VS without the developer console, which is unavailable on the X-Box.

Two things. You'd never have fun as an infected on single player, as you'd b the only boss zombie. At least, that's the way it happens when I 1v1 my girlfriend -_-

Also, it's quite impossible to stop a genius from using a console on a 360 game. Blame Valve for putting the console INTO the 360 version.
