i dont know why, i would be standing infront of a player and the spade would be just going off crazy but no hits. then i aim at his torso area and he gets hit.
valve also reported this as a glitch...

I can hit leg areas, heads, torso, all of that, me and this guy had a fight last night and I hit his legs saw blood and then he got a headshot on me... instant death. Then... I went up to a prone MGer and just starting freaking wailing on his ass and no god damned hit, thus resulting me to being sniped by a fellow teammate of his... pretty annoying.

All I can tell you, since I'm sure others than torsos can be hit, is to crouch, because if you couch it just makes it all the more easier to hit their chest and or legs.

the melee system is flawed!!

A little, flawed it is though.

Even if it's flawed, that doesn't mean I'll stop running down americans with my spade swinging like Babe Ruth.

I went from 54 to 85 in just one day... Didn't even play the whole day neither I'm getting better and better, hell, I should be a gardener when I grow up, whack some fucking weeds off and shit. Oh, and moo... I'd watch out, I'm this close to gettin to ya.

that's because i haven't been able to get on the server lately. i'll be on for a bit today tho.
