I want to play xwing vs tie fighter again, what is comparable to that these days?

What good games does steam have that are dog fighting kind of games (space or earth or whatever)?

    Thanks

I have Wings of Prey. It is a great dog fighting game and has a ton of different things in it. The graphics and stuff are pretty awesome as well. When you get damaged, it will put holes in your wings and stuff depending on the damage taken. The only problem is that it makes you do this stupid Yuplay client thingy. It's not bad, just annoying. Anyways if you get it I will be sure to play with you! =D

There is also a add-on for the game called Wings of Luftwaffe that is way fun as well.

Maybe Sol Exodus... but that is single player only.

Elsewise, the space dogfighting genre has been pretty dead.

There are still exploration/trading space sims with combat in it, as is the case of 'Pioneer' & 'Evochron Merceneries'.

Then there are Capital ship focused combat games in development, as is the case of Angels Fall First: Planetstorm, Blockade Runner & Ensign 1.

For Multiplayer space dogfighting, I'd say your best bet would be either 'First Strike', the mod for 2142. Just hang around during their playtimes, and just wait for the space maps.
or "'Free' Allegiance", an old game that microsoft gave up on and is now free to play.

For single player, I would suggest Starshatter: The Gathering Storm. This game just went open source recently.

For the future, I am looking forward to:

'Freeworlds:Tides of War'. This is a Freelancer mod that is supposed to be released in March(originally it was supposed to be released in December =( ) Star wars, not a simulator, has lots of trade and politics stuff that will be going on, but it will definitely have lots of combat as well.

In the more distant future is 'Star Conflict', which sounds like it'll just be World of Tanks in space.

(although, I am especially looking forward to those already mentioned capital ship focused space combat games)

You won't find any recent Earth based dogfighting sims of worth. All the ones you do find will mostly be WWII era as well.

    I see your options as:

Il-2 1946- no sub but straight dogfighting

Aces High- MMO, tanks, boats, planes.

WWIIO:BE- MMO, infantry, tanks, boats, planes.(Still my sig)

Rise of flight- WWI, so it's different and much more difficult, no sub, straight dogfighting again.

    In the future:

-War Thunder: World of Planes - A game... flight sim... talks about having tanks and boats in it... possibly MMO? not much is really known since they changed what direction they are taking the game in January

-World of Warplanes- expected to be similar to World of Tanks. so 15 v 15 matches, but different than every other game I've listed because this will be very arcadey, and definitely not a sim

Trying the Aces High first, as there is a free two week trial.

These are not 100% dogfighting but...

Freelancer: Trading, Fighting, Pirating, etc.. Decent story in singleplayer and full singleplayer universe in multiplayer and many mods. Released in 2003 though so somewhat older now. Freelancer (video game) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tachyon: the fringe: Not open like freelancer but dogfighting and alright story. Main character voiced by Bruce Campbell. Released in 2000.

X3: Many of my friends love this game although I cannot add too much from personal experiences aside from frustratingly trying to shoot down fighters at the beginning with lasers.
