Re: CIV V is the best of the CIV games so far
I played through a game and was making craptons of gold but had no happiness (Both my neighbors declared war so I puppeted all their cities). Had a whole continent to myself and was able to focus on culture and science for the rest of the game

Still playing my first round. I learned something valuable... idle workers destroy the economy.
I mistakenly believed that the idle workers were actually doing something, and I was wrong. I had hundreds of them standing around, but only a few were actually doing anything.
By eliminating all the workers standing around doing nothing I was able to regain control of the gold production once again.
Still, it's annoying how you're forced to choose something to be produced, whether you need it or not. Plus, there is a serious need for an idle character button.

Weird... Well in the old games they could stack up all the workers in a city when they were done. I swapped to military production for a while so by the time I got around to making workers instead of improvements, there was plenty for them to do.

What a difference it made. I started a second game, only this time I only created as many workers as I needed, and the gold was-a-flowin'
I only had to contend with the "Happiness" value; which stayed low or negative; until the mid point. After that it crept up to a healthy level.
Now I'm tinkering with the cultural aspects. So far the Commerce (whatever it's called because I can't remember shit) style of government works best in a mostly non-combative scenario.
Keeping most of my smaller cities limited to "Avoid growth" has proved helpful in the earlier stages as well.Last edited by RagunCajun; 04-16-12 at 02:36 PM.

By the way, check out the Civ IV tips thread. It won't be exactly the same in V, but a lot of the stuff mentioned on there still applies in V as well (if I recall correctly). It is mostly about managing happiness and cons (again iirc), so it shouldn't be too out of date.
EDIT Finally got back to playing Civ 5, so I need to amend this a bit. The happiness part is still useful in Civ V, just you have to extend it to a nationwide basis instead of each city. The rest is probably too outdated for the new features to be much help (though i think managing what tiles each city is working is incredibly important but yeah).
Personally though I loved Civ IV! Civ V, despite all the damn DLC packs, and the loss of religion (T_T) is still my favorite over Civ IV, just because it got rid of the damn doomstacks (and the ranged attacks are awesome as well).Last edited by Red_Lizard2; 04-19-12 at 05:02 AM.

I played the ever loving crap out of Civ 2 but since I wasnt super old back then I always played on an easy setting. LOVED the scenarios they had especially WWII, Played Civ3 a lot but never got into civ 4, really enjoying 5 and hoping we can get the TPG match up, even if its just 3-4 humans.
