Glad that my advice has been useful. Please note: you can do the same with armor. It tends to be more costly however. And stats are of course much more important to have on your armor.
Another thought on armor, search for your Dmg stat plus vit plus experience on everything you buy, rings and amulets included. The plus XP is insane, couple this with a helm with. 25% ruby and you will out level content very fast. Even better, the stats don't have to be that great on your items if you pick up a super weapon as mentioned above. things will just die so fast it won't matter. I was able to hit 60 before the end of hell, without repeating areas, on just a single play through all the content. Really cuts down on the time sink.
When it comes to armor there are a few things to remember, last has a life expentacy of about 10 levels once you hit level 20. It is easy enough to go through and only make 2 or 3 item purchases as you level from 30 to 40.
The act shifts make a great gauge for when to buy gear. If you can keep going without the upgrade do it. If not grab gear. Another important thing to note is the value of a socket IS very high. If you can grab plus xp gear with a socket for a little more do it! Always consider the socket to be +34 of which ever stat you care about. Tier 8 gems are so cheap it's not even funny. Addationally consider how much this changes game balance to your favor. It's a factor of four... Chipped gems provide +2 ( if memory serves) while t8 gives +34. That's 32 more str int dex or vit the game isn't balanced to deal with.
The same should be considered for weapon gems gem t8 rubies all day long assuming you can find a - level req with a socket, but really that's over kill. It's all over kill. It is a good feeling however to wade through you enemy's blood while not bothering with a potion for the last 45 levels

It's also nice to have equipment with a socket that's more generic in nature to increase it's re-use. Example, I'd rather have two empty sockets with vitality than two empty sockets with strength. I can put two gems of str, int or dex in it and use it for any class. If it's got str on it, limits it's usefulness for any class other than barb.

I'm actually dedicating the bottom row of my personal gear tab in the bank to generic weapons I can use to level with as i'm at the act 2 wall in Inferno on my main. Lowered rec lvl doesn't seem to crop up until lvl 30, but that's not a bigg issue as of yet with my 21% xp helms.
