Does anyone else find golden keys a little gamebreaking? I run all over the place opening every box to max out my gear, and then I use a key and get something that trumps it.

I'm thinking about selling all the gear on my level 30 and starting from scratch... but I don't know if I can bring myself to do it.

I only get all right purple items. The chest just helped along the way when some of my guns were lacking at different points in the game. You could probably sell everything if you go on to playthrough 2 since right now all the end game stuff is farming bosses for legendaries.

FYI, I beat the game at level 33 and now True Vault Hunter Mode is owning me.

Yep, sounds about right. A word of advice if you want your best shot at good unique loot: Wait until you beat TVHM to do any optional missions (that includes accepting the offer for the mission too). If you wait, they scale up to level 50. Enemies, and more importantly the rewards.
