Go ahead. But why would you want to exclude yourself from good content? I have 3 games through Origin: BF3, Need For Speed: Most Wanted, and Crysis 3. I love them all. I am not into Mass Effect or Dead Space series, but they are wildly popular. You would miss out on such titles by boycotting Origin. Trust me when I say they won't miss you.

Every time I here people complaining about Origin, my first reaction is to tell them to quit whining, get some thicker skin, and just play the stupid games. Some games have bad launches. It happens. Hell, when Steam first launched it was a disaster. I got on and when to download the Half Life 2... it wouldn't download because the "servers are busy". Did I cry and ask for a refund? No. I waited for them to work out the bugs so I could get the game I had been anticipating for many years, and it turned out to be great. If I would have acted like a child, stomped my feet crying "now" and ended up boycotting Steam, I could have missed out on a LOT of great games.

Is this a bad place for EA? Yes.

Is EA an evil company? No. Not by any means. They made a bad decision and did not have the server capacity.

Is the DRM necessary? It depends on who you ask. From EA's perspective, yes. It was reported that over 90% of the users that played the original Crysis were doing so by way of a pirated copy. How would you like for 90% of what you produce and distribute to be copied and stolen without you getting a dime? You would hate it.

Is the DRM protection perfect? No. Until they come up with something better, you will need to be signed on to Origin

I have two games on origin, one is available on steam, and the other is a great disappointment. I honestly had to check to see if origin was still installed on my pc.

EA just doesn't do it for me. They have only ever made one game I loved, some 10 years ago or so.

It sounds like you would miss a lot by giving up origin/EA, and I am sad for you. I'm fortunate and happy I don't feel the same way.

Edit - If I did feel the same way, I would find a way to deal with it. Like maybe, buying the console versions.
My question of uninstalling origin is not one primarily aimed at origin, but rather, a blunt statement of intent to hopefully send the message they have broken my/our trust, the honeymoon is over and it's time for them to carry their weight or be left behind. Again, for me, it's any easy walk to take. I was never in love with EA to begin with.

I love the fact ea bashes steam for things they do a week later. I own 2 origin games, one was cheap and I actually repurchased batman on steam later on because I forgot I owned it. I can't stand that it's forced on me. I hate that steam was forced on half life 2 but it was so useful it won me over.

I would prefer a transferable system. Origin allows steam keys and vice versa so the best deal wins. I'd sink origin in a heartbeat.

    Not at all surprised.
The video game market has become super saturated. This means there are a lot of moderately/poorly skilled individuals developing games. The skilled good developers are so scattered and far between that they can't ever get together to make something phenomenal.
Once the game is done, you need a publisher; EA happens to be the largest one (at least top 3). EA sucked up all the small/medium studios they could and sent them to work on new projects.
In recent years EA has gotten worse at deciding what projects get published and what stage of development they're released in. Most developers would be willing to work on a game for years to make it perfect and/or awesome. A producer however wants to turn an investment into profit ASAP. Thus some projects get released prematurely. But what happened here with sim city is deliberate.

Heavy I'm not disagreeing that piracy happens. These are staggeringly high numbers. It begs the question of how to actually combat piracy without unfairly hitting the actual paying customers in the process. Because I am fairly certain that there's not a DRM solution out there that will deter the people looking to pirate the games is the first place. They only stand to make the experience more difficult and/or PITA for the paying customers.

How to solve this? Obviously always on phone-home type stuff is one option. But it's been a pretty poorly implemented/received option in many cases. This one is not unique.

As mentioned by 2D Games (World of Goo creators), here, they're fairly certain that the piracy didn't actual cost them much in terms of sales and that most/many of the pirated copies were not lost opportunities. Furthermore, they stated that due to ^, they wouldn't try to combat the effects as they felt it not worth the effort.

There's this where Crytek raised the number of Crysis 1 activations per key to 50. Admittedly, this was a long time after it's original release and designed to allow for nostalgia play-throughs or people new the franchise. But, they have no way of ensuring that these are legit or not either.

Ubisoft who has had their fair share of DRM debacles states that they intend to go the F2P route since they see about the same amount of revenue from F2P MT as they do from actual sales. Again, DRM is proving to be ineffective at curtailing piracy and simply acts as a hindrance to legitimate consumers.

In the face of those concerns....what to do what to do? It just seems that the paying public always get shafted. This is no different. Just more of the same. It's really fucking aggravating though.

Re: EA Does It Again - Sim City Limited Edition

I was wanting to buy crysis3 the other day and realized that I never finished crysis2. I bought crysis2 and loaded it on my old computer then a month or two later I built my new computer. I never went back on my old machine and finished the game. Now I can't load the game I legitimately own on to my computer. Cost EA a sale of crysis3. Bf3 was a waste IMO. Done with EA.
