    Teamplay then and now...

Instead of clogging up yet another EA/BF topic with my verbal diarrhea about why I loathe where the franchise has gone I decided to start a new, more general, topic. Many of you are probably thinking, "Hasn't he said enough already?", and you are possibly right, but when I read some of the replies from some of you I don't think you really get it. It is not about me trying to prevent any of you from having fun, or me even trying to convince you that you are not having fun playing BF3. It is about me making a personal choice to stand my ground, and it is not just about video games, but more about society in general.

We now live in a society where teenagers sit within 2 feet of each other and instead of actually talking to each other they text. I choose not to be part of that demographic, and that extends to video games. The only reason I still play video games is because of TPG, and without VoIP TPG servers really are no different than any other server. Yes, I can join a squad with known friends, and we can all be in TS, and we can probably have a fun time, but what about the other 20+ people that are on my team, but typically not in TS?

TTP BF2 was great because I could start a squad, let 5 random people I did not know join, and lead them to glory. Yes, sometimes it was a pain in the ass because 1-2 of those random people would not spawn green, or push the objectives, but they were dealt with swiftly. TTP BF2 was great because we had people join the forums specifically to apply to clans like PHX, HRD, IRON, etc simply because they were excited to hear so many of these players working together using in game VoIP instead of some clan voice server.

To me the bottom line is if I can't play the game "the way it was meant to be played" then I would prefer not to play at all. I am never mad at anyone else who does decide to play, actually quite the opposite. I am glad you guys enjoy it, and I am glad TPG can provide you a place to enjoy it, but for me the thrill is gone. I hope that EA will choose to bring these things back, but I realize they do not have or need to in order to move massive units of BF4. If they don't maybe some day some other developer/publisher will say profits be damned we are making a Teamplayer FPS that competes with BFX, and then I can truly enjoy playing a large scale FS again with friends. Or maybe it's time to just hang up my FPS hat? Only time will tell.

    2nd

BF2 was simply a pillar for the population here. BF3's lack of voip, small squads, and focus on a CoD style game choked off our influx of new TPGers.

Does not include =BSS=, ergo thread is invalid (Joking, but serious I'd credit =BSS= first, then other clans. Though part of that is likely due to starting to play when I think =BSS= was about the only BF2 clan, thus bias.)

On topic, I have doubts on the possibility of seeing a large scale FPS focused on teamwork. The dominate consumer of the genre seems to want the same bog standard crap fed to them over 50 different games, I guess so they can go play the same thing they just got bored of? *shrugs* It's going to have to be indie and small developers that can create frostbite 2 or buildings collapsing all over the place in 1080p to lead the way on teamplay based FPS. And I'd assume the problem there is the feelings of not being able to compete and make money against the big boys, because of their dominance (that and market overcrowding, which thus need more advertising to break through and that would be hard for an indie).

That or maybe we've all become incredibly ADHD, I know the slower paced stealth gaming doesn't seem to sell as well, and god forbid stealth based and teamplay. Though RPGs seem to be doing okay, so maybe it isn't as bad.

I agree with all said there civil. Then again I just prefer personal interaction in general... People I work with can't understand why I'd rather stop in and talk to them face to face or by phone instead of email and im which are the new standards. As for game developers not putting in VoIP and whatnot in...why bother when they will put a new numbered series out in 18 months that will sell massively despite obvious and massive flaws? I don't agree with it but you won't see me buying those games either.

As for rpgs, those are orders of magnitude faster and more action oriented than what they were in what I would consider their heyday ...98-03 or thereabouts.

    Baldurs gate 1&2
    Planescape torment
    Ice windale
    Morrowind
    Ff 7
    Ff tactics
    Legend of dragoon
    Kingdom hearts

Those are just some of the most common names but all of them would be considered slow nowadays. Less action and more planning and strategy. Extends to the MMO crowd as well. Then again I could be biased because I think that was the heydey of gaming in general.
