Re: Best games of the generation
Pretty much what has been said already:
Minecraft (I think this is the true winner as it was a completely revolutionary idea)
Crysis and Crysis Warhead
Battlefield 2142
Sins of a Solar Empire
Supreme Commander and Forged Alliance (for the love of god not supcom2)
Mass Effect (I give this points for the story NOT gameplay)
Team Fortress 2
Fallout 3 and New Vegas
Just Cause 2 (you can tether boats to airplanes in the process of taking off and Viola: flying boat)
The HUGE issue I had with this era of games it it seems that the game ideas really started getting regurgitated and not in a better way most of the time. PC gamers lost a lot of normal features in exchange for better graphics. We also saw a general difficulty drop in games as well as an in game puzzles to sell more games. (I am looking at you Activation and EA)
On the other hand we saw a lot of games succeed from smaller developers with revolutionary ideas. Steam also became mainstream during this era. We also are seeing the conception of the glorious game Star Citizen and we shall bask in its glory... yes yes I know I have a problem.
