Outerra: The foundation for the next best open world sandbox game?

Stumbled on this on the Rust forums. A complete playable 3D map of the earth.... i need to read more on it, but at first glance this looks really interesting.

    Outerra Anteworld Alpha Demo

Has anyone checked it out yet? Or even heard of it?

It's been in development for a long time.

I remember when the demo was released a few years ago.

It's nice and all, but in my mind it has been lumped in the same pile as 'Infinity'. Seems like a nice engine and tech demo, but that's all it is currently and will be for a looong time, so it best to forget about it for now.

That said, I think the engine is more suited for vehicle simulations than an open sandbox like Rust.

As ive been watching videos, i think someone even posted a demo video here once a couple of years ago. Curious to see just how far its come to date. That demo download page was just updated on the 14th....

Given how advanced GIS is getting, it doesn't surprise me that the data collected could be extrapolated into 3D geometry fairly easily. The only problem is seeding things like grass, trees, etc.

Modeling cities would be a problem too, given the very specificity of the things that humans build and the inability of a satellite to capture that sort of detail on a city building. Those are things that would have to be done by hand, but for the overall world it makes sense to me.
