And they aren't really stealth games in the sense that Splinter cell or thief is stealth, this one is more just like, getting into the right location before you drop in and tear sh** up. There's plenty of sword fighting and murderizing.

I do. I loved the original and tried to love the sequel on the NES, didn't.

From what I have heard, I've avoided all the sequels since.

I thought it was more of the same. I can't remember if I bought two on Steam or just played it on console. I didn't care for it either way. I played the one set in Colonial America on my roommate's Xbox. Climbing took no skill. Combat was pointlessly easy with quick time events for almost every enemy attack. The story (outside of the virtual reality) has gone to shit as well.

Metal Gear Solid on PS1 was worth playing/watching for the Psycho Mantis battle alone.

Yeah, but starting with that one and the capabilities of the PS1, the series became much more heavy in terms of story. I enjoyed it. The gameplay was also great. War is less interested in story and more on action, so they aren't his cup of tea. They aren't really games you can skip the story and know what's going on the first time through.
