09-06-14, 04:45 PM #1XCOM: Enemy Within
Started up a new Classic Ironman runthrough.
I got really excited with my starting position:
Yeah, I'll have to juggle satellites a bit, but 3 steam vents on the second level...
Then, I saw the stats for my soldier that got promoted to Sniper:
84 aim at Squaddie. Enough said.
However, despite careful maneuvering, my soldiers missed a dozen odd shots where accuracy was at 98%...against Thin Men in the early game.
Time to start over. QQenf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

Well, I've certainly enjoyed it. You can't play this game even on easy like an easy game (ex. Bastion, the new Thief, etc.). I'm also playing with several second wave options such as Hidden Potential, Not Created Equal, Firing Angles, and the one that boosts critical chance due to flanking. I've got others enabled, too.
A lot of people will see this and think they should start off on Classic (analogue of Hard) or Impossible as that's what they do in other games. Those modes really are harder for XCom. You also just can't move/research/build willy nilly. You've got to stop and think. Then, you act. Do something brash? Expect to die. Of course, that can still happen even in the best of circumstances.
Playing on Ironman is also NOT something for first timers to the XCom series (or even just this game). There's no quicksaving/quickloading to save your bacon. You just have one save that autosaves. You live (digitally) with the consequences. It makes the memorial wall actually mean something.
XCom is similar to a roguelike in that regard.enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

I couldn't get into XCOM:EU. It was a good game as far as the design, sound, and visuals, but I wasn't having fun. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.
