The problem with using a tabletop game is the balance of powers from army-scale units to single players, i.e., balancing a single Space marine against a single Imperial Guard. Which is why I would lean toward a shooter. Plus, battles raging across multiple planets lends itself to large instances/servers.

Depending on interest, you could market it as the next big shooter, or a crossover MMO, with two worlds. One similar to the current shooter genre, several static maps, persistent unlocks, same boring game. The other, a ladder/permanent conquest game system, mapping several worlds, each with bonuses. Members pick sides and maintain one character (or character type, because you're going to die a lot) and battle across worlds, gobbling up planets like so many squares on a board. Some systems grant supplies or bonuses.

The latter system sounds like a lot more fun, but I'll have to see how Conan does with a persistent, large scale pvp world. Instancing it into different servers would make the stress load on individual systems much less, and hopefully eliminate the lag that prevails in the current large-scale MMO's (e.g. Eve).
My first choice, would be to make a FPS 40K. Styled like bfs/COD 4, with a hint of gears of war (Ripping people to shreads with powerfists) and have huge planet sized battles.

Second would be to make an open world RPG, like oblivion, but with many, many changes.

TTP style play in Siege mode would be awe-inspiring... Man I miss that game...

Hell ya t2 was my first online game ever! DSA!

but otherwise, i research/design the visual and logical (physics portion) engines used by programs like simulators, games, rendering engines etc. I work on ways to simulate various visual and physical objects/events in day to day actives, optics and fluids (especially wind and water) are right up my ally. Currently im working on a way to simulate the vegitational growth of an environment based of givens like %of water, shade, climate type, etc. Eventually i hope it to be used to generate random landscapes for simulators (especially games) with this players could have a unlimited resource of maps to play on . All someone would hvae ot do is just plop it into a engine and make all the models for the thousands and thousands of plant species i used , since the simulator already places the plants nothing else would really need to be done.

Surprisingly ive never really thought about this question ima have to sit on it for a night and edit my post tomorrow

You can change, height, weight, add abilities, longer springing time etc. Change your character's facial features, uniform, camouflage, Equipment load out. Pick and choose any three guns, primary, secondary and sidearms. All the characteristics of the guns in real life. You unlock features via points. Need X amount of points for a certain gun or ability which will deduct points after you purchase as well as a rank requirement, ranks cost points as well. Makes you manage your points as well. Not to mention medals and awards for achievements and the like.
    You just described Battlefield Heroes

Re: If You Could Design a Game...

I'd do BF3 very much like BF2, but de-emphasize pilots since as it stands one or two GOOD pilots on any team changes the face of the battle entirely in that team's favor. Battlefield games have ALWAYS been pilot-centric right from day 1 in 1942. Either by making it easier to down an aircraft, or even making piloting a bit more realistic instead of arcadey.

Have player damage be more realistic (to an extent). Hits to legs slow someone down... Arms affect accuracy... head shots are killers period. etc. Speed of a soldier would depend on his gear. As it stands, I think fatigue is handled like this but speed itself should also be handled. Stealth should be better handled. At a distance even in a sniper is in some heavy weeds he can be seen just because the draw distance on that kind of thing is handled poorly. Not sure how I'd handle that actually... difficult to do without upping the computer specs significantly, but there has to be a way.

Basically just tweak the game I like to play anyway.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

Re: If You Could Design a Game...

If I could design a game it would be completely different, it wouldn't be a sequel but my own original idea.
It would be a mmorpg, these are some of the things i considered to make it great.

    1) 4 different factions, all represented by there own color (blue, red, yellow, green) each would have their own specialties when it comes to attributes and would all have a different mount, landscape, and different looking armor in each faction.
ex. Such as the red team would be in a somewhat deserted/volcanic place with limited resources but given the materials needed could make the strongest weapons in the game. (Mount would be something that went along with the desert/volcanic landscape)
ex. Blue team would be in the mountain range, they would have superior defense attributes. There castles would have great fortifications due to the mountains, but there downside would be their lack of wood resources. Mount would be a mountain sheep ).

    3) there would be 4 different classes,
    A) Warrior: As like with other games would be either a tank or aggressive high hitter (depending on what faction you may want to pick one or the other to take advantage of faction bonuses), warriors would also be given the chose of duals, sword and shield.
    B) Archer: like in other games would have nothing entirely new. (maybe a bow with pointed tips on the arced wood that they could attack, and would have wood extended from the string to the shaft to make somwhat a shield to defend with when struck)
    C) Mage: each faction would have their own different mage class with their own different abilities. ( ex. red would have pyro, green would have necro)
    D) Defender: This would be the healer class, what i have seen from other games was that this class being the most important class. but with the downside of being borring. They would use a weapon i have thought up myself (defenders) dual saber looking weapons. They will be able to make a pretty good bit of damage in addition to healing themselves to level up themselves while without a party . but in PvP they will need to be healing due to their low hp.

    2) the factions would be in set alliances (blue/yellow) (red/green), each faction would have a limited supply of a certain resources which would be in great need of, the only way they could get that resource was to either trade or gain additional land in weekly/monthly territorial battles. (weekly would either to fight over brand new places to gain resources or siege of a enemy territory. Monthly would be a big battle over a new castle/town that is brand new parts of the map)

    3) each player would have a list of professions in which they could choose 2, these can vary from farmer, fisherman, armor, blacksmith, animal salesman (would take care of pets for different purposes, such as have ponds/dens to raise animals for cooking purposes to heal hp, or to raise mounts), cook, logger, miner, ect. (some would want to be used in a set, like a miner and blacksmith)

    4) Each player would have their own home in the castle, in which they could expand it and set up a shop in part of it to sell their goods to others in the town. Because there will be a lack of space in the future. This will increase the demand of winning new towns to increase factions economy. If they are in desperate need the King could change a land taken from a weekly battle and get rid of advantages of resources and decide to pay a large amount to make a town.) Because there would be only so much a server can take it would have a cap of people that can play on that server.

    5) Each faction would have a king (king would be an actually player not a npc). they would be granted x amount of funds to greaten a castle/towns defense, or to give to actual players to advance in their profession/ class. They will be players that have already played the game, to ensure that they don't use the vast amount of funds for themselves they would be already be set up with a set weapon and armor(again set to the advantages of faction) that would get progressively stronger as they level up. They would boost moral in weekly/monthly battles (a bonus to participants in fighting from the kings faction). There faction income could also be used to greaten the skills of already playing members or if there is a shortage of people in a certain class could have it set where if a new player could be set with either class or set with a nice set of armor and weapon to start them out.

    6) there would be both sea/land battles. At first it would be land, but if the idea ever grew it would maybe be in an expansion.

This was just an idea I expanded on while I was bored, It it estimated release day if most likely never . But i thought it was pretty creative.

Btw this is my longest post i have posted. took me half an hour :P
