hey.
Hippos and any others that read this.
I have a completely crazy idea. I am going to revive an old game. I want to play Tribes 2 TTP style.
I know what you are thinking. But it could be a reality. Tribes 2 is available for free and it extremely teamplayer oriented. It takes some doing to make it work now with no master servers, but I am not above writing a guide. I am going to do some research on this, but I first need to know if I will have any players. If so, I am going to see about renting a server for it from TTP. A no cost awesome game, how can anyone go wrong?
Post a reply here if you are down with this or if you think I have become old and senile and this will never work.Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.

you have never heard of it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tribes_2
It has a STEEP learning curve, but you are well rewarded for your efforts with a very fast paced, very original game that requires a lot of teamwork and communication to win. It predates the battlefield series and battlefield uses a lot of concepts that first appeared in the Tribes series. Its a tactical class based FPS with vehicles and jetpacks. You can completely customize your weapon loadout for each class. There are three main classes, scout, assault, and juggernaut (Light, Medium, and Heavy) Scouts are light and fast and can pilot any vehicle. They also can choose to carry the laser sniper, a unique weapon for their class. However, they have little armor and are very limited in what they can carry for weapons. Assaults can carry all but two of the possible weapons and can carry more weapons than scouts. They have more armor but are slower. Juggernauts are big, heavy tough and very well armed. They can carry the most weapons and they can choose to carry the fusion mortar, the biggest gun in the game. However, they are the slowest and cannot pilot all vehicles because they do not fit.
The weapons are very unique. Laser rifles, chain guns, heat seeking rockets, fusion mortars, plasma rifles, grenade launchers and other fun stuff. Everyone also gets a laser spotter that can pinpoint spot for indirect fire from teammates. Some handy gadgets can also be carried, deployable turrets, personal shields, cloaking packs, energy packs (energy bar that powers jump jets and other things recharges faster) repair kits, deployable radar sensors, deployable motion sensors, deployable cameras, sensor jammers, refill stations,
The maps are huge. No I mean huge. We are talking battlefield huge. But, this infantry flies. All players get jetpacks. You can use these to go very fast. you can even use them to ski down mountains and gain tremendous speed. Ski down a valley and up the other side and you can gain speed and altitude very quickly
Vehicles are a must. There are hover tanks, hover cycles, fighter jets, bomber jets, transport jets, and mobile bases. Most requre more than one to crew.
Fighting your way into an enemy base is no easy task. There are permanent turrets of various kinds to deal with, shields that must be taken down by destroying the generator that powers them not to mention the other team make any assault with out coordination difficult at best.
There is weather, and it actually matters. If it is visibility is low on a map due to nighttime, rain, snow, fog, or desert dust, you will need a teammate to set up a sensor array and you will need a teammate to laser spot for your mortar fire.
CTF was the most popular style, but I preffered siege. In siege mode, one team defends a fortress and the other attacks it. After the base is captured, they switch. When that round is done, the team that did it the fastest wins that map.
Anyway, it was a great game that was very inspirational to many other games and has the unique twist of jump jets. Its a total blast. Sierra murdered it by removing some of its best features. It had in game news, forums, clan pages, browsers, stats, and such. They pulled a lot of that because they did not want to moderate the forums and news properly.
TTP style play would be amazing in this game. They have it available for free download but there is some technical stuff that has to be done to make it work right. I will research that and find out what needs to be done. I own it, but I will have to mess with it to make it work as well.
Stay tuned for more developments.Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.

Update:
I have decided that I will try and make the free version work for us. So far, I have it able to run using an alternative master server patch that will let it work without a CD-Key. I will need a volunteer to work with me to see if a dedicated server shows up on this alternative master server list.Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.

anyone who wants to help me test this needs to post here a time (and timezone) so we can coordinate when to do this. I will see about running a dedicated server and forwarding a port on my router and whatnot. If that works, the next step is to take it live and get SJT17 to return a pm about renting a TTP server for it.
