Good old games has it for like 10 bucks and it will run on xp and vista just fine if what I read is correct. I an I fully agree. Pimping out my wife for ammo and gas money has to be some of the finest moments in my gaming history.

An interesting deal I found on the first 2 games, not sure if I'll do it though.

Re: Fallout 3 - Prequels required?

As far as plot is concerned:

Fallout is the first in the series, and it features the aftermath of a global nuclear war (there's an amusing bit with the US taking over Canada in the opening sequences.) People are shepherded away into underground Vaults, which are later discovered to really be more like science experiments in a vacuum than anything else - every Vault had something wonky with it. In this case, your Vault, Vault 13, needs a water purification chip for its water purifier doohicky so people can still have clean water to drink and whatnot. They send you out, and while you're running around you discover some big mutant army and you end up having to kill them too. You finish all this and the people decide you've changed too much during your time outside the vault and lock the door on you.

Fallout 2 takes place some time after Fallout. Seems that the previous you, after being locked out of your home, wandered around forever and eventually founded this little tribal village called Arroyo. The previous you is revered as a sort of demigod, and you're one of his ancestors. Seems Arroyo's going to shit because of bad land and whatnot and they need a Garden of Eden Creation Kit in order to fix it. Every vault was supposed to come with one of these things... and of course Vault 13 got two while another vault got none. Anyway, it's similar - you go run around the world (which is really just the southwestern former United States, including a rebuilt San Francisco) and get one. You bring it back, and oh hey everyone's dead/gone. Seems these pricks called The Enclave are running around and either killing people or scooping them up for slaves and whatnot, so it's up to you to go stop em or something. Also turns out they're the remnants of the former United States' leadership and military, only since there's no rules anymore they've decided to be complete elitist dicks. So you go out to their base which is on an oil rig off the west coast and blow up the nuclear bomb they had there, killing them. Similar ending, by time the journey's over you've changed to the point where you don't really fit in among the savages you used to call friends so you ditch em.

Fallout and Fallout 2 in a nutshell.

I wouldn't buy Fallout 3 until the level cap is released. If you are like me you will want to explore, my game is close to 90 hours long and I have NOT been gaining XP for about the last 40 hours. I really enjoy the game is all, but seriously capping the level is a bit retarded.

There are mods that remove the level cap. Why Bethesda is including it as a "feature" in the next DLC is a mystery.
