Huayna Capac of the Inca. For purely min/max reasons.

The starting unit for the Inca, the Quechua, is basically a warrior with a free combat 1 promotion and a +25% versus archery units. In the early stages of the game, where most of your enemies are archers or warriors, they stand strong. If you give them city attack promotions and then attach generals to them and upgrade them, you eventually have some badass city smashers for every generation. And when you eventually get them to 200+ XP and upgrade them to mechanized infantry... no city stands in your way.

Also, Huayna Capac is Industrious (cuts build time for wonders in half). This means I stand a beter chance of getting those wonders. Which is really crucial to getting ahead in the game. And Huayna Capac is financial; this means each tile produces at least two commerce produces one extra commerce. And when you have a lot of cities that commerce adds up and means the difference between buying improvements and having high science to tax ratio or being left in the dust.

So my choice is not about some vision or preference of culture, but sheerly about game performance and my playing style.

I used to really favor the English Elizabeth. Financial + special banks= $$$, and lots of it. The extra money allowed me to expand and build more cities sooner, but I quickly found myself poaching on enemy territory, without the means to defend myself, especially earlier on in the games. So now I'm beginning to like playing as China, I tend to play defensively, so protective works well, and expansive faster workers and buildings really help early in the game, allowing me to focus more on archers and the like to defend myself. Plus Cho ko Nu used to be my favorite unit in Age of Empires 2, and is rather awesome in this game too.

i've found myself playing a lot as Japan when i've played. Usually the first thing i go for is trying the different civs that people don't usually use when we play the matches.

Reason i like Japan is it helps with my weakness in the game which is usually attack and defense, i tend to focus more on building my civ up and high culture then armies so the bonues i get with Japan are pretty helpful to beefing up a bit.

England is great if you can get the Redcoats ASAP, I think in the last game i wiped out quite a few forces with one or two redcoats in a city. Of course i got them too late and didn't have the time to upgrade to hold back the attack but still they can be deadly

I prefer the aggressive trait and/or early troops, like the Genghis Khan and Keshik or Ragnar and the Beserkers. I like to play 2 continents and destroy everyone on mine. This usually backfires later in the game. No one usually likes me later on.

Rome, if you last long enough to get to praetorians you basically win, preferred leader for rome would have to be good old augustus ceaser.

Praetorians are basically swordsmen that are as strong as macemen (attack value of 8 ) except they don't have the +50% vs melee units maces do

The industrious trait has already been mentioned by soy but imperialistic can help with both expansions (settlers are produced 50% faster) and getting great generals earlier (twice as fast as someone without) This means that you can basically always have a great general before most of your opponents, the settler speed helps if you play from 4000 bc with advanced start off, because then you can settle the good spots faster.

All in All I'd say it's my best race/faction but I've been known to play england occasionally.

This is absolute truth, I haven't lost yet when I've gotten praetorians, although for whatever reason I always seem to better when I play as Isabella and Spain too...I think its just random luck though. 8)

I've taken a liking to Mehmed of the Ottoman empire. His organized trait helps a ridiculous amount with REXing, with halved maitenence costs and cheap courthouses. And then Expansive is just a solid, if a bit weak, trait that is useful in a variety of situations.

Their UB is an aquaduct which gives +2 happiness, useful if you are having problems finding happy resources, and the UU is a well rounded unit that has an especially long life on Epic speed.
