07-27-09, 11:45 PM #1Command and Conquer
so i decided while at wal-mart to pick up the C&C first decade disk and check it out. So any info on the games, which one should i play first, or are all of them just as good?
For record the pack comes with Red Alert, Generals, and the original plus a bunch of the expansions trying to find a full product list.
Also will they run on Vista, sorta forget to check that *slaps head*

Re: Command and Conquer
Out of the first decade pack, Red Alert 2 is my absolute favorite. If you're looking for multiplayer action it's very competitive though you'll run into some trouble being a noob to the game (as usual of course.) The campaign is short and fun, though fairly easy. The expansion's campaigns will put you in some interesting situations, but half the missions are just giant shooting galleries where you just have to drill your way through a massive base.
Tiberian Sun is probably my second favorite, though the game will take some getting used to as it still acts and feels like their older games. I don't know if there's still an active multiplayer community. As for the campaign I will say that it will get you thinking because there are rarely any clear-cut strategies that always work... that's essentially another way of saying it's pretty damn hard. Also I recommend saving mid-mission a lot on any of the missions where they just give you a few units and say "go". Don't be afraid to retry some of them either, as some points of them you just have to know what's going to happen or what to look for. (The GDI mission where they give you 3 MLRS hovercraft to infiltrate a base in Norway comes to mind.) Firestorm (the expansion) gives you more of this campaign experience, and should be something to enjoy.
As for Red Alert 1, it is definitely something to check out, as the campaign will probably still be challenging (still more of the "have to know what's going to happen" though.) Don't bother with mass-computer skirmishes though, as they will all team up on you and just raid you (even if they themselves are unallied.) Also, it's well known that soviets are better than allies, if for nothing else than that damn tesla coil defense.
Original Command & Conquer? Play it to get back to the roots of the series, but don't expect much. It was made after the success of Dune and plays much like it but with more strategic options.
Generals used to have an active multiplayer community (and I don't know what's become of it,) but it is extremely competitive. I know it ran into problems when EA announced it'd stop releasing patches despite people knowing about glaring balancing issues in the Zero Hour expansion (CHINESE INFANTRY GENERAL ARGGHHH!)
Oh, and renegade plays like the old FPS's of yore. Think Tribes or something similar.
Also, I know the original C&C and Red Alert were reworked to run on WinXP (they originally did not.) As for Vista, I'd imagine you might run into problems.

Re: Command and Conquer
For some reason Tiberian Sun has problems on my vista machine, but all the rest of them run very well.
Imisnew2 and I were playing these about a month or two back, mainly Generals and Zero Hour. Let me know if you want to play, we could get a 4 player game going sometime.

You might be disappointed with the graphics in the original C&C and Red Alert... they are just outdated and old. That being said, they were both great games. I spent much of my high school gaming life playing the original Red Alert.
Hell, I played them all... most recently, I went back through Command and Conquer 3 campaign. It was a lot of fun.
Generals is the shit... but only if you have Zero Hour. I was the shit with the Air Force General. If you want, I would gladly install it and play with you. We could start off easy with some comp-stomping, then take on some kiddies. Generals sparked back up the Command and Conquer series, as they were starting to fizzle after Red Alert 2's Yuri's Revenge.
PM me if you want to have a go at some of these games... I have them all.

Re: Command and Conquer
The first CnC game I played was Red Alert 2. I would vouch for that, Generals (but the balance isn't that great), and Tiberian Sun.
If you have problems with Vista, follow the instructions here. I just installed the program (first decade) in compatibility to XP Service Pack 2 and have no problems now.-----
