Other times are for added production (early one, later should have mines and shit set up to do that), or added commerce (til some cottages are up and running). But most of the time unimproved tiles are pointless.

Whipping. I forgot whipping. Slavery is possibly the greatest civic in the game if used right. I still struggle to remember to use it enough tbh. Basically it's what is gonna build your infrastructure and units for a good part of the early game. Use it often and regrow fast!

Hey man, these other guys have some great advice too.
I really like what Pseudo is doing here and I certainly think it is article worthy. It is inspiring me to log my next Civ game and make an article out of it. But I gotta write those health articles first!

Re: TTP Noble 1: Willem of the Netherlands
Round 1: The Great Scouting Expedition of the Glorious Netherlands (4000BC-2875BC)
We start off by moving the Settler a tile west. A loss of a turn but at Noble I don't think it will hurt that much. We settle Amsterdam the next turn

So there weren't any hidden resources apparently. That's ok though, we got more land tiles and the starting position is still excellent! I notice some hills to the west. Looks like a good production city to be found over there!
My build order for Amsterdam went: WB, WB, worker, warrior. I worked a 1F 2P tile to begin with, getting my WB out ASAP.
My initial warrior scouts around a bit and further west we meet

Lizzy! A very powerful leader, she is heavily favored by new players. I find that she is a great late game leader although her traits can make it hard to decide on an economy early on. She's very peaceful, albeit a slight religious nut.
Around this time my first WB was completed so I switched to my new improved clams tile! With Willem's financial trait the tile gave me a whopping 4F and 3C. With the next city growth I put another 1F 2P tile to work.
Shortly afterwards me meet

Alexander! A hawkish warmonger...I'll have to be weary for a bit. I think I'll manage though.
At 3250BC I finish Bronze Working! I switch to slavery. Now the burning question: do we have copper?

Yes we do! I plan to settle that city ASAP. With corn, cows, copper, and a load of hills I think that I might have identified our primary production city. Copper gives my Axemen, which in turn allow me to delay researching archery.
The turn before we got BW, Lizzy founded Hinduism. I hope the other religion founder isn't on the continent...
Then at 3150BC we get a random event which causes a turn of setback for AH. Ah well, that's life. A few turns later my warrior popped an EXP hut, I promote him to Woodsman II for double movement in forests. That should make exploration go at least 4 times faster.
Here I decided to round off by marking down possible city sites.

Half of the cities are being placed to block off the AI from settling my land. They'll have to fight their way out if they want to come in...
Demographics:

Round 2: Rexing Congressional Style
But alas, I have lost many pictures from this round it seems! We shall make do with what we have...
Anyways I began in Amsterdam by improving my pigs. It was a tough choice between them and the marble but I decided that food would be more essential as it grows my city after I whip and provides hammers for workers and settlers. Afterwards I improved my Marble.
My immediate build order after my first warrior finished was another warrior along with a settler. It's never to early to Rapidly Early eXpand! (Or Rex). I cannot stress this enough, plot your cities early and make settling them the #1 priority. I don't care if you want to build a military. I don't care if you want every early wonder. You will either expand or cry later when you only have 2 cities.
Here is the most optimal way I produce a settler at this stage of the game

At any rate, it was about this time that my warrior popped another EXP hut, getting the Woodsman III promo! that's 15% more healing!
After I whip the settler I need time to regrow my city, so the next project of Amsterdam is a barracks.
In 2225 BC Utrecht is settled!

It starts producing a worker. I sure love them workers...
In 2100 BC the people of Utrecht find some lovely truffles, making a potentially killer grasslands/hill!

I then meet Mansa Musa who I forgot to get a screenie of.I'm on a roll. Mansa is a teching FIEND who loves to trade just about everything for anything! If I can get some good trading techs I can already forsee a bright future for our two civilizations...until I loot and plunder his lands that is.
In 1950 BC I whip out another settler. A couple turns later

That also gets to work on a worker.
Amsterdam in the meantime makes use of Willem's CRE trait to get to work on a Library
In 1675 BC I meet

Cathy! The Russian rexing queen who loves to say controversial things while backstabbing you! I'll try and get a screenie of some of her funnier sayings.
In 1475 BC Tacitus declares us the world's largest civ! Hot dog am I proud.
After Amsterdam's library is complete it starts building the Oracle. Between marble and high production it gets done in less than 10 turns! in 1275 BC the Oracle is complete and we take Code of Laws for our first tech. We now have access to the almighty Courthouses! The greatest building for rexing, ever.
In 1200 BC we meet

Justinian. A zealot who expands like mad. And he's the founder of Buddhism...since I've hemmed in Elizabeth I think I will go with the Buddhist faith. Plus all of the more powerful civs are located near Justinian, increasing the chances that they will adopt his religion.
I make a tech trade with Mansa: IW and Hunting for Alphabet. With my new found tech I search my lands and find

Kickass! Our metal worries are over for now!
Our third settler is finished and I march him off to block off Alexander only to find the bastard has already expanded into my land! Ah well, now I guess I'll just have to use two cities to contain him...anyways, I settle Rotterdam in a less than optimal but decent spot

And with that I decided to end the round.
Our techpath was: Masonry, Wheel, Pottery, Writing, Mysticism, Meditation, Priesthood, Alphabet

Re: TTP Noble 1: Willem of the Netherlands
Been almost a week since your last round. I have found what you have posted so far interesting and some what entertaining. I realize how much time this takes but I think a lot of new players will find this very helpful. I myself am most interested on how you handle the other leaders. Hope you continue this thread.
