Re: IW confirms TTP will not host MW2

Just listening to this podcast (which is quite long by the way, over an hour into it and the bar is only 1/3 into it) it sounds like they are or might be keeping the graphics to the whatever the max a XBOX360 can run, which pales in comparison to the PC counterparts.

Still sounds like a bunch of speculation, but they bring up a lot of good points here. They are talking about IW possibly just saying they will use a feature to Steam or the L4D route might be a new way of the future?

Or if there is a deal for Steam and a lot of Steam support, will this be a Steam only game and will they use VAC instead of PB?

I'll have to look later to see if I can find more info, but like I said this is a very interesting podcast.

I'm concerned with this as well, if other companies follow suit it will surely be the death of mp on PCs.
While i do not have any internal sources regarding the mentioned companies, from a professional stand point I can take a pretty good guess as to why some game development companies are choosing this path.

Reason number 1: Hackers, If your looking to make a hack, many keys lie in the servers source code. If skilled malevolent dev's get their hands on the dedicated server binaries, they can decompile them and examine the source code for exploits and what not, to use to develop certain-most-sought-after types of hacks for the game. While its still possible to develop hacks and cheats for a game without the dedicated server files, having them simplifies the process.

Second, every game developer is twitchy about releasing anything that contains source code, or insight on engine internal methods, especially those that are deemed trade secrets or deal with access to a stats database (ex reason why bf2 ranked server files are not publicly available). Typically, the dedicated server files contain a significantly larger portion of these trade secrets than the client files. Since game engines have come a long way, every day that transpires lengthens the distance between competing engines. Newly created engines are at a serious disadvantage, because they are years behind the leaders of the industry, and again, everyday that they work on their engine, is yet another day that the leaders get ahead. This makes the industry extremely competitive thus the "give them as little as possible" ideology is born.

Third, off of #2, seeing the market for consoles, of which most multiplayer servers are NOT hosted by communities but rather monopolized game server companies which already host oodles of nonpublic server files; which makes them more favorable than the widespread, competitive pc game-server hosting market.

There are many other reasons, but they generally are a result of newer or nonleading game companies not being comfortable with giving out files with contain t.s. or methods they hold dear. However, there is some light: because of the industry leaders like Valve, Crytek, or Unreal; game developers who choose to develop a game around a preexisting engine, will more then likely, not even give a second thought to releasing dedicated server files (because they already have been released by the engine dev's for showcasing ex crysis).

All-in-all, don't worry about it, only the cockroaches in the industry are the ones who consider not releasing the dedicated server files, and subsequently screw themselves over all-the-more because of it.
Furthermore, in my personal opinion, as crazy as it sounds, the companies that are taking up this ideology are the ones that dont-care/pay-attention to the community and/or the multiplayer scene. So the games they release, are the games you dont want to play anyways because the support will suck, the game-play will blow, and the game will die out before it even sees its first year birthday.

    So i say, good riddence.

But by then there will be MW3!

I fear that the CoD series is turning into Madden, Fifa, and all the other sports series that release a game a year without making any major improvements to anything.

I think we've already seen that with the COD4, COD:W@W (aka COD5), and now this so I guess we shouldn't be surprised now should we? I suppose it is our own fault for thinking/hoping they'd change. :3

Exactly, what they are doing is playing the market like movies *cough* saw series *cough*. Instead of dedicating the funding to the resources for fixing a game to extend its life to obtain possible profit that comes after the period of release (in otherwords money made from users who buy the game from word of mouth), and focus on that period of release (the first, second, and third wave of users who bye the game to try it out and or tell their peers how it is). Put simply, they are playing quantity over quality, facing the risk of loosing the user base and creditability of their company to gamers, in order to exploit them.

Unfortunately, the current companies which utilize this idiotic logic, have a few divisions which they can fall back on after their laughable play backfires on them. So sadly, they will not crumble as a result of their stupidity and rather are encouraged by the nickle-in-the-hat profit's they make from the victims they prey on. They are the ones who take the easy road and produce games like Cod 4 and cod5, tribes vengeance, __any series game that had a great 1st and a shitty sequel___, etc-etc. Cod's already a lost cause, their engine (refering to cod4/cod5) is unstable and very-very anti-modding (includes everything from game mods, to admining tools). Furthermore, is apparent from cod5 that the dev's in-control of the cod series pay no attention to the community and either are to stupid to see the value in a competitive player base, or are the few who cannot climb any learning/skill curve, what-so-ever.

Making a single-player game is easy, the complexity comes in when you want to make it multiplayer. Lately, cod dev's have been trying to attempt this but give up half way in and release their failure polished up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rax27_ZIVM

Hahaha, I love that episode. It was funny watching them try to polish the poop.

Polishing their crap is a good way to look at it. I never played the early COD games, but even after the first one, it just seemed like they were adding on to an already existing game. Guess I got caught up in the hype of COD4 since it was finally in the modern era and then W@W with the flame throwers (which were OP ).
