You linked to the bottom of the first page... Anyway read through 5-6 pages seems legit. Il be downloading this and testing if anyone else wants to get (preferably people who, currently, cant host). Hit me up on steam tomorrow so we can check this out.

Re: possible work around for those who don't want to forward ports
Well borderlands was officialy added to the list so if youv been reading that thread you no longer have to "point it out on your hard drive".
Looking for a way to disable the stupid "Blabla opened a room for borderlands" message..
Newstuff from pages 12+13 of the thread Mort linked.

For all that wanna know, here are the EXACT steps I took to have my game joinable with a friend. Also i'm using the steam version.
1. Downloaded gameranger, registered and got my friend to register too (I didn't have to add borderlands to the gamelist, it was allready there)
2. Loaded gameranger and pressed the "host" button on the right of the main window above the list of games
3. Configured the lobby (password, friends join etc)
4. Got my friend to join the lobby by inviting him in gameranger's friends list
5. Pressed the start button, (steam was allready open)
6. Borderlands loads, at the title screen, press enter like normal, then I went to Lan Game and made a game
7. Waited for my friend's borderlands game to load (started loading as soon as I made the Lan game)
8. Once i saw him in the Lan game lobby, I started the game
9. Once claptrap gave us our hud at the very beginning, we could see each other, and play the game without a hitch!

GameRanger should take you all the way through the Borderlands menu screens into the lobby automatically, but if it doesn't, just do it yourself manually. Make sure you go to LAN and not Online.
Before you launch, make sure no one's name is in italics in the GameRanger game room. The name in italics means that user is trying to connect to the host, but hasn't succeeded yet (this is before you launch). That could mean a problem with the host's connection if multiple joiners are in italics. If only one user's name is in italics, it could either be that user or the host that is having problems.
The Port-Restricted Cone NAT Router is just a warning that some people may be unable to connect to you. The italics indicator will tell you for sure.
The "Borderlands is still running" alert appears only so that you'll see it if you alt-tab out of Borderlands during the game. Borderlands takes a while to launch, which is why you see it early. Just ignore it and let Borderlands finish launching.
These seem to be the common errors people are experiancing.

Re: possible work around for those who don't want to forward ports
I think so. I joined a game and heres how it worked for me.
Someone starts a room other enter, once none of the names are italicised (italics = no connection) then the host starts up the game. All other players get a "waiting for host" thing UNTIL the hosts game is running and then he waits while everyone else connects. It runs the online portion through the lan section of borderlands co op which is kinda strange but it works... Select your character and go. I got to help a guy kill sledge on playthrough 1 had some lag isssues so couldnt aim very well but it still worked out. Cant wait to play with less lag and with people who I know :P
