I personally think the crouch walk animation suits the alien well.

Maybe switch the animations a bit, but make the 'walk' button the stand up button, keep crouch button to charge pounce, but stay in crouch mode while running around.

Ya modding is difficult. But if you reach the point of map making, I'll be glad to attempt to help. But for now I think it would be best just to get the basic skins going.

Here are some 'expanded universe' (from comics etc) for the alien series that lists different alien castes other than the ones in the movies. Some could be altered slightly to fit the types of enemies in L4D.

Dog aliens could be the Hunter.

Perhaps eggs everywhere as the default normal zombie, and when gotten close to open up and spawn a facehugger. (Sort of how the normal L4D zombies don't notice you till you are close or fire on them).

Just some ideas. Good luck if you attempt it.
