Gaming for money?
My idea is as follows:
1. set up gaming servers that are configured for $5 per seat (use paypal)
2. best team will have won the most points based-on the number of maps played -- may be possible in all games TPG manages
3. the won money goes into a cash pool (visible) that pays for our servers first, then, if TPG teams beat outside communities to a profit margin, figure some cash/prizes to distribute
4. we could experiment with this idea in-house first, however, if this idea gets into the right people's hands, VEGAS will have online game-gambling quick
Should we explore the possibilities of renting a server in Vegas (if that is required by gambling laws)?
Please post your thoughts. I assume catching hackers may be a big reason to not do this.
Thank you for reading,

Re: Gaming for money?
Why because they are better than you and you get no cash in the end? Who ever the better person is deserves the prize dont you think?
I'd rather have competitive gamers than sore losers who just troll the chat with "lucky n00b!!!", "haxor, fuck your momma"
EDIT: Yeah i sound rude, it's a sore spot for me. Whatever.Last edited by damian; 08-16-10 at 04:15 PM.

Re: Gaming for money?
I don't quite follow. You mean 5$ per map that you buy into? How are teams picked? Do you mean you get your own team together? Or its the team you happen to get assigned to?
Interesting idea in theory but I only see it working in a structured lobby/scrim type environment. Sandbaggers would also be tough to deal with.

Re: Gaming for money?
You could set it up like the one-day texas hold'em tournaments at casinos, where you (or your team) buy in for a set amount and are entered into an 8 team tournament pool. It wouldn't show who the other teams in the pool are until the teams are finalized, but you'd try to have the wait be less than an hour after registration starts. Make it a relatively quick format, maybe one map per match (teams play both sides, first to a certain number of wins wins the match). This would result in a 3 round tournament (round of 8, round of 4, then round of 2 to declare winner). If it caught on and got popular obviously there are a number of other marketing things you could do, and of course you'd have targeted ads on your signup page. You would give teams 10 minutes between matches to prepare, and it'd be on them to get around any issues like lag/someone dropping/etc. You'd try to make it so that the whole thing finished in something like 2 hours for the winning team.
Once one tournament pool of 8 teams is full, start up the next 8 and if 8 more sign up then start it. After an hour if only 4 teams are in, do a 4 man tourney. Refund money for any team that doesn't play.
Your money would come from ads and taking a cut from the entry fees. So for an 8 team tournament, if you had $5 per person per team ($25/team for normal CS:S) and 8 teams ($200) you could take $20 off the top, give $120 to the winner and $60 to 2nd place and people'd probably be pretty happy. Obviously you'd want to have all kinds of stat tracking, "achievement" style things (i.e. how many map wins you got, how many kills you got in tournament play, how many times you reached semifinals, how many times you won, stuff that makes people feel good) on your web page (throw more targeted ads on there).
I think it'd be fun. You could even do different cost brackets (like $1 or $2 per member instead of $5, which'd be like 2-4 limit poker vs. 3-6 no limit) so that the uber players would spend their time in the big leagues and the casual players could still have fun. It'd be like a pickup game that you could play with a bunch of friends if you're bored.
Once a team has played in a tournament, give it the opportunity to make a little clan page. Have a big forum where people can discuss things. Make new threads for larger tournaments. Give people a reason and a place to talk smack, talk about wins, watch old matches, etc, with targeted ads on all of it.Last edited by Toad; 08-16-10 at 05:52 PM.
