Duke Nukem Back? Really?
I almost checked the calendar to see if it was April 1st.
'Borderlands' studio Gearbox resurrecting Duke Nukem
No, hell hasn't frozen over and pigs aren't flying ... at least not yet.Publisher 2K Games plans on finally releasing the shooter Duke Nukem Forever, which now falls under the development hands of Borderlands studio Gearbox Software, the Wall Street Journal reports.
The news has been independently confirmed thanks to 2K Games' Twitter feed, which features snapshots of a Duke Nukem Forever booth at this weekend's Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle.
"Quotes from fans passing by. "What?" "Wait, really?" "Dude, no way!" "Duke Nukem!!" Yes, it's real," reads an update from 2K's feed.
The Journal reports Gearbox began work on finishing up Duke Nukem Forever in late 2009, and the game is expected to arrive later this year. "We're in the polishing phase now. This is a game where we can not make a promise we can not fulfill," Pitchford tells the newspaper.
To say Duke Nukem Forever is long awaited is perhaps the greatest understatement in the video game industry. The game was introduced in April 1997 before meeting several well-publicized delays and the eventual closure of studio 3D Realms.
The game will serve as a sequel to Duke Nukem 3D and feature a single-player campaign and multiplayer.
Update at 2:07 p.m. ET: Gearbox Software has confirmed the game through its Twitter account. "Let everyone your mom, dad, friends, sisters dog, etc know. Duke is back baby!," reads an update from Gearbox.
And Gamespot is reporting the game will actually debut in 2011, on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
I loved playing the first one, hopefully Gearbox will do the franchise justice.

Re: Duke Nukem Back? Really?
I'll play it just because it's fucking Duke.
But... I don't think it'll stack up compared to shooters like Half-Life or (cringe) the more recent Halo games (much as I bash console gaming, I can't deny they've made the Halo games excellent examples of the genre.) It might not even stack up to shooters like Crysis and Far Cry.
I'm concerned that we'll have spent all this time waiting for what's basically going to be something as complex as Serious Sam was. Yes, I know Serious Sam basically combined Doom and Duke Nukem to create its gameplay.
But... damn, it's gonna be good to have Duke back.

Pretty decent hands-on first impression article from PAX. As far as the game itself goes, I'll withhold judgement until more in depth previews come out, and probably some reviews as well. But I think I can speak for everyone who gamed in the early/mid/late 90s when I say that I would love the Duke to return to his throne in the FPS world.

Re: Duke Nukem Back? Really?
We all know it will. Duke is from the 90's, when shooters consisted of find blue key, use on blue door; find yellow key, use on yellow door; find red key, use on red door; kill boss, escape level; rinse, repeat.
No matter what they do to it, DNF will not be able to compete with story-driven shooters like Half-Life or Halo. But if they don't try to compete with those games and instead focus on the Duke aspect, it could still be a fun game worth the money.

Yeah, I agree. Assuming of course it actually comes out. This has been such a long wait, I'm wondering how the game will actually be. It'll probably suck by most of our expectations of the game since we all loved the original games, but if it actually comes out it'll still most likely make a killing just because of the fan base that has been following the game for so many years.
That makes me wonder though what they'll actually do with that money, perhaps try to make a sequel quicker this time? 5 year wait instead of 10+?

Re: Duke Nukem Back? Really?
There will be a point at which Duke will become derivative of itself. Simple expansions that are just glorified map packs won't work today like it did in 98, and there's a limit to how much male chauvinism Duke can produce before it just gets boring and stale.
