    Bukkit + Essentials Plus Ins

    Ok I've been playing with Bukkit + Essentials plug-ins for a few days now and I'm impressed.

    There's a TON of things that we can add to the game by using it. The downside? Every time Notch screws with shit and puts out an update there might be anywhere from a few hours to a few days where we have to run vanilla while bukkit gets updated if it breaks. But Bukkit appears to be THE way to include plug-ins and mods at this time.

    The default Essentials download includes things like:

    /sethome and /home like the old mod we were running

    economy plugin where players have "money" and a person can set themselves up as "vendors" (gadget!) to sell things simply by setting up a chest where anything that is taken out of it removes money from a player. If the player doesn't have enough money he/she can't take an item. Likewise special signs can be set up that act as vending machines, selling specific items (in never ending supply).

    Warps and Teleports can be set up to transport from one part of the world to another including things like delay times between starting a teleport (mostly for pvp and monsters to eliminate being able to instantly teleport away from danger) and cool-down periods to disallow chaining teleports together without a delay between.

    Groups. Both for setting up permissions for specific commands, and setting up things like guilds and such.

    The Nether. Yes, you can enter the nether. I'm not ENTIRELY sure how this works or how well it works yet as I haven't tried it yet. But supposedly you can enter the nether just like in single player either by using portals or if allowed, just typing /nether.

    Multiple worlds. Not only can you go to the nether, but you can generate your own world and transport between it and the primary world. Far as I know any number of worlds can be generated (most definitely wouldn't be a player command to generate worlds... The memory requirements would far outstrip the server capacity).

    Healing. Specific commands to heal players. These commands can also have "cooldown" timers to disallow healing too often.

    (Note that between groups, heal, and teleport commands players could even be assigned "classes", such as wizards who can teleport and clerics who can heal.)

    Property protection allowing someone to "lock" their chests allowing only those people they want to be able to open and take things from them.

    Jail... Yes, people can be placed in a "jail". If you get placed in jail you are warped to a jail area and they are then disallowed from placing or destroying blocks.

    Nicknames, kits, in-game email, distance limited chat, manual mob spawning, tree spawning, player selective pvp permissions, player specific chat commands (such as whisper and messaging specific people and /me command).


    As you can see there's a LOT of stuff in just the essentials plug-ins. And there's a lot more that I'm investigating. I think Bukkit + Essentials itself would be an awesome addition and will likely implement it after I've done some more testing.

    On topic, if the economy plugin is to be used, how is money gained in the first place?

    I haven't played with it yet, but players can be assigned money to start... but value can be given to pretty much any item and then "sold" to the world. So if you find a diamond in the mine, you can /sell the item in your hand and be given XXX money for it. It then disappears from your inventory. At least that's how I understand it.

    Nether, want now!

    Economy, interesting to mess with.

    Multiple worlds, our current one is large enough no need for more.

    Healing, we have food and with economy have food shops. Healing seems bleh.

    Property protection, yes.

    Jail, yes cool.

    Nicknames + other chat junk, meh I like the teamspeak set-up we have now.

    What is this 'Kits' business i wonder?

    If it's what I'm thinking of from other servers, you just type some command and get some basic tools. It's just to start people off, I think.

    If the economy could be implemented properly, then gold would actually be valuable for something besides clocks and prestige blocks. Definitely worth looking into.

    I tried /sethome and /home a couple hours ago and got nothing, so probably still being tested. I can confirm that it works on other servers, though, so that at least should be added soon.

    I have some more testing to do before I determine what to turn loose and what to restrict... and also how to manage some of the options. Once I get that done I'll put it on the real server.
