A lot of it comes down to the writing and depth of the characters.
Early games like the Final Fantasy Series (See FF3/FF6J) and Chrono Trigger are prime examples of masterpieces. FF3 had multiple character arcs that you could travel down and learn more about the different people you used and the writing in the game was just masterful. Many of the characters you actually cared about and wanted to succeed, and I just don't feel that in the more recent games.
It's like the developers said fuck the story, here's a whole bunch of GLITTER!
I do have high hopes for FFVS13 and really wish we had some of the old writers doing these games. I mean find a game whose graphics are designed by Akira Toriyama and you normally have a really solid story along side it.

I do love me some Chrono Trigger but its hard to compare the really old RPGs with the ones of today. Most kids these days cant deal with a game unless the graphics are amazing. We old timey PC gamers know that graphics arnt everything but developers cant afford to pander to such a crowd. They got to go appease the masses.
For a new age RPG dragons age is great (along with mass effect) DA1 and ME1 both had a shit ton of equipment customization and plenty of dialoge you could choose to go through if you wanted to know + all the codecs + journal history stuff in the games. Compared to old games the side character development is shit and ya the difficulty isnt all that grand. I remember losing hours of work cause I died at some random point in a game and hadn't saved. The autosave feature is great but the checkpoints every 15 feet is kinda bullshit. There needs to be SOME punishment for playing poorly... DA2 and ME2 kinda pussied out on characters by giving you only a few weapons/ armor to equip, and both games have like... 2 missions per side character that "fleshes" out their reason for helping you. Its weak but its better then nothing.

BG2 is fantastic. I've played through it three times and bought it from GoG awhile ago in a fit of nostalgia. The only RPG I liked more is Morrowind (with mods). Those games were fantastic and I hope that we can have some games that get back to that level of production values in a game's plot and mechanics. They also had some respect for the player's intelligence and allowed the player to actually explore the world. They actually made fairly thorough worlds to explore.

It would of sucked to play BG or icewind dale with out my previous knowledge of how a DnD game works. That might be part of the problem the game mechanics need to be understood to be able to play the game successfully.
