Pro Tip: For a domination victory on a 1v1 (Dual) try to mass produce military and attack their city before they get very far in research. Most likely they would not have massed warriors and you will have the advantage. Cities are at their weakest in the beginning. Often you can win by turn 50 with this strategy.

    2) Founding a new city takes happiness; they will usually pay for themselves at first, but will eat a few happiness. I usually build a second city when happiness is 5 or higher, 7 is good. You just gotta make sure you keep your happiness up buy acquiring luxuries and building circuses/colosseums/stadiums/etc.

    3) I will only buy tiles if I need the resource badly or to prevent an opponent/city-state from getting a tile. Sometimes I buy tiles to seal off land so no one can move through it. (I don't make open border agreements until I control enough land they can't build cities near me). Later in the game, if I am expanding (especially into new landmasses) I will buy tiles in order to get the new city resources quickly so I can make it grow. This requires lots of money, so it is a late game technique. Generally, I try to save money for unit upgrades in the early and middle games.

    Also:

Roads cost money, unlike previous versions you absolutely should not build roads willy-nilly. Use roads only to hook cities together for resources or for specific strategic advances into neutral and enemy lands (you may remove them later). Think ahead to make the least number of road-tiles needed between cities.

Connecting cities via roads yields large trade-route bonuses for money. I try to hook my cities together ASAP to compound the extra money turn after turn.
