Just playing devil's advocate and reminding that CTF can be teamplay oriented even without class selectors. I will agree that Q3 CTF is a weak case for an old school game with good teamplay... but UT2K4 assault mode is a better example. This is really all straying from the OP though which just mentioned Q3.

A quick history lesson.
Even the almighty Id, makers of Q3 realized that DM was dead in the water. Q3 is arguably the greatest DM game of all time. But, because the focus was so much on DM when they made it, they faced unexpected stiff competition from the original UT because UT had modes other than just DM. This prompted them to release the Q3 expansion, Team Area, which had a focus on a more team oriented style of play. With the closely timed release of Tribes, and CS, and Rainbow 6, it was obvious to anyone who made games and not just game engines that tactical play had a broader appeal than just straight up DM. That is why the UT series started to shift toward more team based modes like Assault and Domination. (two modes pioneered by the Tribes series) Other games followed suit as well. BF1942, Day of Defeat, Team Fortress and Wolfenstien: Enemy Territory just to name a few. With the release of BF2, which borrowed heavily from the Tribes 2 scoring system, Team based games really came into their own. BF2 had the team style scoring system of Tribes 2 (Scaled down a bit) set in a more traditional setting than the Tribes series. In addition, BF2 brought in the concept of squads. (not commanders though, Tribes 2 was first there too). The reason these games are more popular than DM and why DM is dying out in the pubs is due mostly to two reasons
First, Being on a team, gives a new guy some backup. Sure, he may get the same 2-45 individual score that he would get if he was new to DM, but his team can still get a win and even as a newbie, he can feel like a part of that and maybe even contribute to the win in some small but crucial way other than just twitch shooting a bunch of enemies.
Second, One team beating another is a deeper experience than just an end of the round score. I think gamers have developed into wanting more out of a game than just twitch shoot outs. When you combine the tactical side, with some good action, you have a hit. Look at CS and how long that simple formula has been popular and continues to attract new players every day.
That is why DM is a dying breed. Yeah, there are still people playing it. There always will be. But they are not growing their player base with PC players who have evolved past that. The console guys are, right now, where PC gamers where 10 years ago when you bought the game for the single player and the multiplayer was really just an add on that could extend the value of your purchase for a bit. Who knows, someday they may even catch up to us.Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.
