CS:S and sounds
Hi all,
I tried searching for a topic to bump, but didn't get one. So...
First off, I understand that it is entirely within any admins on the server's rights to play sounds during a round, such as the knife music.
I am requesting that either, a) the sounds be removed, b) admins don't play them, or c) make it so that alive players don't hear the sounds (if possible).
It is a little frustrating when during a clutch situation, a sound is played. CS:S is VERY reliant on hearing footsteps, grenades, weapon switching sounds, etc. More so when you are the last (or one of the last) surviving members of your team. I understand that when it's 1v3 and the server is full there are 18 other people watching and potentially being bored, but it would be greatly appreciated by the surviving players if they didn't hear sounds.
For example, suppose the situation is 2 terrorists vs 4 counter-terrorists. One of the CTs knifes a T. Knife sound is played. The last terrorist now can't hear the 4 CT's movements - he is at even more of a disadvantage. Or, he is now able to move freely sound-wise - the CTs can't hear him.
Crippling one of the player's in-game senses by adding a server-wide soundtrack isn't a good thing, IMO. I think the best option is C, but I haven't seen the API or source code for whatever tools TTP uses for sounds, so I don't know if it's possible. I'd like to get an intelligent debate going on this if possible.
Thanks,
Anubis

Re: CS:S and sounds
I thought something similar to this, but an LS option to decide which team hears it if not both teams. The occasional rushing together music is really fun, but has to be done sparingly. Even so, it has a tendancy to screw up communication and the ability to have any sense of audio direction at all.
I do not see the point in having only dead people hear the music. The admin mod coder I am sure has many other things to worry about at the moment, but that is something to consider researching down the road. Music submenu as to which team(s) hear the music.

Re: CS:S and sounds
For the most part. The admin just needs to have good judgment as to when music is appropriate or not, the most common being the knife music and music at the end of the round. Beyond that it really becomes a distraction. When we were running mani, each player could change their settings to allow music or not. Lonestar currently doesn't have this option, but it is on the to do list. Until then, I believe, and somebody please correct me if I'm wrong, you can use sv_allowdownload 0. Just make sure that you already have the maps downloaded and go delete the mp3's from your cstrike folder.
