All of my other steam games work fine, except for this one. I don't always get the error, the first time i ran l4d it worked fine. the 2nd time is when i got this error. then it worked all of the sudden, but again this morning it appeared. I tried all of my other games after i got this error this morning and they all ran fine.
    SOLVED!

I have two spare machines running XP with 8800's... One gets a "Frequency Out of Range" or a "Monitor does not support this imput"... bla bla bla....

Changing settings in Windows does not effect this what so ever...

Here is the fix: In steam, right click L4D > properties> General Tab>Launch Options... Inside launch options, type the following: -startwindowed

This will allow the game to launch Windowed and FORCES L4D to use the refresh rate specified by Windows.

Once there I was able to change to Windowed-No Border. You can change any setting you want; but I was unable to get it to work in anything other than Windowed or Windowed-No Bordered. L4D does not have refresh rate settings. Hope this helps and enjoy killing the Infected.

I understand that part. Did you buy the game or download it free from some other site?
