Re: verification for search?
Currently, if we did not have captcha someone could bomb the servers pretty hard by spamming the search feature, its that resource intensive (as you would expect from searching through 2,000,000 posts). So we have to limit how many searches users can do per second. Best, most reliable method was captcha (i always hated the "you must wait another 15 seconds before searching again crap"), you can search as frequently as you can fill in the captchas.
Though, this will actually be changing very soon.
Among other things, search will have its own dedicated box, so ya'll can search to your heart's content. Worst case scenario, the search box gets overwhelmed and locks up, eventually auto-reseting within 15 minutes. Meaning there'd only be 15 minutes of downtime for manual searches (forums, new-post pages, articles, etc, would be unaffected), everything else would be independent and thus working fine.
However, there will still be a max # searches per X seconds limitation; though, the limit will likely be small, maybe 5 seconds.

Yeah, my problem with the search here was that you would search then it would bring you to a page that looked like the search failed to get you to captcha, it would be simpler if there wasn't a search bar and just a button to bring you to a search page with captcha
