AT&T Discontinues Unlimited Data Plan due to Heavy iPhone Usage

Rate this Entry
anyone else hear about AT&T stopping their unlimited data plan and putting a cap? at first i was really upset, but it looks like this will only apply to new users... existing users may keep their unlimited plan.

other phone companies are expected to follow suit.

I imagine that after the contract expires, you'll have to get the tiered plan.

My major issue is that other companies, if this is successful, may try the same thing.

What blows is that I'm holding off until ATT gets some decent android phones or the new iPhone. Perhaps the Samsung Galaxy S or a variant of the Nexus One/Incredible. By that time (not in 4 days) i'll be forced to get the tiered plan...

Yeah I agree about the tiered plan...

They are saying 95% of the people don't use 2GB. Then there's the thing about how data transfers via wireless routers don't count... only data by 3G counts towards the 2GB limit. But still... I was kind of upset by the principle of the matter.

It does indeed suck though. I agree with Cheshire Cat though, once your contract is up, I'm guessing they'll make you get a tiered plan as well otherwise it would defeat the purpose of the change.

Further discussion is in the thread above.

If you don't renew your contract with ATT, you continue on with the same contract unless you upgrade/change it or discontinue the service. We just reduced our family plan to 700 minutes from 1400 and added on unlimited family texting (me and my brother). 20/month less for the plan and 30/month more for the texting, net increase in 10 dollars/month.

Our contract expired last november and we didn't contact ATT about anything. We've been billed at our previous contract rate ever since until now.
