some help?
So, a friend of mine and I are looking to get back into MMO's - craving a little more long term enjoyment than your basic FPS or RTS. Problem is, we started in the genre back when it was much different. For me, it was EQ, pre-kunark. I've tried several different MMOs, LOTRO, Vanguard, GW, and none of them seemed difficult - or in MMO terms, punishment for failure was rather light. Are there any MMOs out there today that are difficult - i.e. require some brains to play well, punish a player for mistakes, require some initiative to get and finish quests, etc.?
And - I unfortunately have to rule out EVE, simply because of the massive front-end time investment required to get going in that game.
thanks,

Re: some help?
eve is a brain game.
But I think this says it all

I remember the good ol' days. I started with Diablo II (if you could call that an mmo) and DAoC. FFXI is a very heavy tactical game, but you will never find a group in that game unless you are Japanese. And over all the community sucks.
Its hard to say if any games are 'hard' because they want people to play them, this means stupid people too. So most MMOs are very simple and don't need a lot of number crunching.
As for AoC. I have not seen any of the high-end game, but I think they want to have sieges like DAoC had in its prime, and those were very much so tactic based.

ffxi is pretty tough and punishes you for screwing up. the reason its tough though is because the game itself sucks (imo). There is no way to know ANYTHING without looking it up. The whole system is flawed in my opinion because of that. you have no idea where to go, how to craft, how to gain fame, how to know if you have any fame, how to do missions/quests without looking it up.

i partially agree with cojiro, ffxi was a tough game, to be a high lvl in that game you earned it. i cant tell you how many times i lvled up and put new gear on, then died and de leveled and realized i sold my old gear.
but unlike cojiro i loved the game, it does not cater to you by any means, but its similar to EQ where all the quest givers dont have a giant exclamation point over their heads, you have to look, but i loved the game. i think the major set back it that it has been going for quite awhile now and there will not be as many lower lvls to help you through the game. Final Fantasy XI is not really a soloable game so finding a group is key and sometimes can be rough. i dont play anymore but if they ever came out with a second one i dont care what im playing i will be all over it like white on rice
or also join the bandwagon and give age of conan a shot. it has more in common with wow than EQ but its a great game and a fair amount of us are playing. we have an establishment on a PVE server and a PVP server, ask coj about the pvp server tho im on the PVE

I have to disagree with you on a few things Cojiro. FFXI was a great game with a Japanese bias and a crappy community.
The crafting system was more intricate than any I have seen since, combat was good (but still loosely turn based. ill count that as a flaw) The 'job' system was ingenious and great for the reason you did not have to make more than one character. (this is a good thing 'cause you pay for everyone after the first °_0)
You did have to look a lot up to know whats going on, but how many people do you know that go to thottbot before they set off for any quest in wow?
At any rate; the game is way past its prime don't bother to play unless you have about 5 friends that also want to play and level together, from level 1 to when you all quit.

i like Anarchy Online (www.anarchy-online.com) its sci-fi bases mmorpg with a free to play program, there are real world ads though just to warn you but i rarely notice them anyways lol. It can be fairly challenge if you can't get a few people together with you as depend on your breed and weapons. Plus from what i've noticed the monsters have their own amount of hp, AC (defense) so some are a pain in the *** to kill alone.
THe other challenge are where you get punished is in the leveling system, instead of like a WoW etc where it actually puts the skill into your bow or this or that, you decide where your skill points you earn from leveling go. Different classes have different costs associated with the skills, for example my MP has dark blue for body dev (hp) so it takes more points to improve my hp then it does to improve my nano tech skill (light green). Given the breeds as well have different costs to (atrox can lvl in hp easier for example) you can screw up from the startlol. fun game though imo if you aren't shallow about graphics.
