    Re: WoW Cataclysm Announced

that might be it...all i know is i kept all my robes in there and would do a fashion show :P I don't miss the "lines" for camping a spawn for a particular item that started to happen after a while though

it wasn't a chest from ne of the planes...it was dropped from somewhere..can't remember

so you were a freakin doooo gooder pastie eh?
not me...i was a dark elf necromancer....i used to make you guys my pets :P

I loved kiting sand giants along the beach and watching waves of pasties flee into the water! <cackle>
or casting levitate and my skel transformation spell and running around freaking out the nooblets

god i miss my eq necro...hasn't been a char since in any mmo..that had the spell variety she had

I do miss the spell system a bit in eq...where some of your spells had to be made and it was a skill you had to level and collect stuff for it ..i mastered it so that I was able to provide services to those young necros rising the ranks to have those special spells when they had their pages

drama/burnout is what in the end drove me from WOW ..my primary was a priest...and I don't intend to go back

...but for me..where is the fun in doing a mmo doing it by yourself...but then the formation of guilds etc of the like open up a whole nother can of crap that you just dont want to deal with

sigh..perhaps cuz i was a mmo virigin in eq that it had its early appeal....and that the server initially did some roleplay etc of the like...but went down hill later due to evercamp...lines for this..lines for that...a list to get into a plane

i still hope for that feeling to return somehow in some game but i guess once your cherry is popped....its down hill from there :P

I just remember the very early days, playing with a buddy of mine in the Greater Faydark outside of Kelethin. We were killing skeletons and wasps... running away like crazy when an orc would come busting down the trail from Crushbone. And we saw this guy run by carrying a sword made all of bones and going "WTF WAS THAT!?" He was probably level 12 or so if I remember right. We'd never seen a Bone Bladed Claymore before and it was fascinating. But shortly after that we saw a ranger show up and everybody gathered around him and was oohing and ahhhing over his armor which was all green. And he had these curved short swords on his belt that had lightning dancing over them. "WTF IS THAT?!!?" Short Sword of the Ykeshas... Dual. OMG THIS GUY WAS A GOD AMONST US LEVEL 5ers!!!

And like you, the minotaurs in the gorge... and the beholders... and those puddies that threw mud at you and blinded you... I thought my computer was broke when I first went blind. I couldn't figure out what happened the first 2 or 3 times it happened.

That kind of OMG moment just doesn't happen with any MMO any more. And it's a sad sad thing.

Problem is, people aren't interested in waiting around or putting forth some effort to get something these days... they all want it now and they want it without any effort involved. This applies to real life just as much as it applies to games.

But is progress really a bad thing? I mean, really, how much did you enjoy having to spend two full gameplay days (like 6-12 or more real-life hours) farming mats for flasks and potions and sharpening stones and shit? How much did you like having to kill a few dozen metric tons of furbies to reach exalted and get that recipe you needed for progression?

How much is too much? On one hand, it's nice to really feel like you achieved something when you finally hit exalted with that faction and got that rare recipe and you can start charging ludicrous rates for that super-rare enchant or weapon craft, since you're only going to be one of like ten on a server of hundreds or thousands with it. But at the same time, that kind of system means parts of the game simply aren't going to be accessible to people who just don't have the time to invest in it. Is it fair for the single mom who works two jobs and has to take care of her kids to not be able to see all the new content and lore progress because she can't afford to invest 20 or 30 hours a week in the game like the college or high school student who's living off of Uncle Sam or mom and dad?

It's a balancing act. I remember back in the first six months or so of WoW, when an epic item was really epic, because virtually no one had those things. Where having an epic mount was incredible, because no one could afford that 1,000 gold cost (back in those days, just having 200 gold meant you were pretty well off.) I remember when servers were small enough and people were friendly enough (those profession forum trolls and assholes who effectively had Tourette's Syndrome for internet memes weren't around back then, or were ostracized if they were) where damn near everyone knew everyone else, which helped keep drama at a minimum - and the drama that did result was usually just amusement for everyone rather than the hardcore nerdrage crap that goes on now.

But at the same time, if you wanted to play the game seriously, you had to invest an ungodly amount of time and energy into it. Want to see Ragnaros? Well, you gotta spend cumulative weeks of real-world time farming mats and doing bullshit time-wasting things to see him. Want to progress in the PvP system and get that rare rank or fancy mount? Hey, be prepared to invest even more time, because now you're also directly competing against your own teammates.

Things in WoW are more accessible now, and less archaic. I guess that means there's a little less fun than there once was for statwhores like me, for whom some of the fun is simply in puzzling out the perfect combination of stats to result in the best possible performance of your character. But at the same time, it's nice knowing that, if I were to become interest in raiding again, I would still be able to see all of the content even working 50 or 60 hours a week.

Sure, it'll never be the same as it was the first time, but that doesn't mean it can't be fun

Sad day when they changed it so your UI still showed up while you were blind. Thinking your computer broke because you just got blinded was pretty much the high point of EQ immersion imo.

    Re: WoW Cataclysm Announced

As a 1st gen WoW player I will be reutrning to the game after being burnt out by burning crusade and the overshadow of "purple shit" they added. This is a new deep breathe with real enviroments that have been changed not just adding new ones. I sold my old account but actually playing a 10 day trial this week and taking advantage of my "free" 20 levels I can get before actually buying the original game again. I used to stack the damage charts as orc warlock but looking forward to trying a resto shaman. With the shaman changes it's much easier to level now due to several minor enhancements. Not only can you get your basic mount at 20 but you can dual spec....enough said. Also the "ring" buffs you cast on yourself don't cost mana to play like lightning ring which in itself helps you out drastically so far through levels 6-15. I never stopped to drink water like I am now and I will definately be buying a 20 basic game box next paycheck.

You can truly be rewarded as the casual player now although I do look forward to healing large raids. I spent 3+ year fearing people and lifetapping; annoying the shit out of arena players and BG's it's time for me to heal a bitch :P

    Re: WoW Cataclysm Announced

Cho'gall is one of the worst servers out there in terms of faction balance... it's like almost 5:1 Horde:Alliance. Though, really, PvP on the whole has experienced a huge downturn in activity levels across the board compared to TBC. Blizzard really, really fucked PvP over with WotLK.
