I can tell you that it is fun to play. The mechanics are solid, but the real test of an MMO is end game and I haven't made it there yet. I've purposefully strayed from reading too much about it so i can form my own opinions about it when I get there. My opinion as a lvl 22 now is that it was worth my money, but i can't say for sure ill still have a subscription a year from now.

I hear that it lacks content ie: quests etc.

I haven't had to grind so far, but you do have to look harder for quests. Basically you can't skip whole zones of quests like you could in wow. There are maps out on the web that show you where to go at a certain level for quests. Also, cryptic has made it a priority to add new quest content through their frequent patches.

I'm not currently playing it, but I enjoyed it while I did. The game mechanics and character creation and customization are solid and top notch. I never experienced the dearth of content that people seem to be complaining about, but then I never got a character above level 18 (altaholism).

Re: is champions online worth my time?
I was talking with some friends on CoH.
Story is: on launch day a lot of people (in my circle) came back to CoH at around 2 pm and complained all day about Champions.
but then again they are die-hard fans of CoH.
I played in the beta and loved the customization but did not get a lot of game time because of RL getting in the way and servers where only open 4 hours at a time.

I played the beta as well and I more or less enjoyed my time on there, I wouldn't mind playing the full game again but I don't have the money. Also I have been trying to find a game to break my WoW addiction, but alas I have not found it! I guess its back to being a grinding zombie......mmm grind 8)
