Mechwarrior Online Announced.
Looks like the Mechwarrior 5 game that a vid was released for a while back got changed to an online game. It will no longer be set in 3015 but in 3049 right before the clans start to invade. No word yet if you can be clan, but the main segment of the game will focus on a persistent conquest mode instead of just deathmatch like world of tanks.
You can register and save your pilot name on the site.

Some pretty good concept art already...

I am thinking of starting a company or larger sized group for this, let me know if you are interested.
Projected release date of the game is next summer with beta announcements to be stated near new years.

There has already been a big Q&A session:
MechWarrior Online | Developer Q&A 1
And it is not really a 'persistent conquest' like you said.
It really does sound a lot like World of Tanks.
edit: I'm not saying that's a bad thing(I already reserved my name back when MWO was first announced and I enjoy WoT's clan battles).Last edited by Blah64; 11-17-11 at 01:38 PM.

Re: Mechwarrior Online Announced.
I registered my name just in case "Alundil"
As for the F2P thing - I don't think it's a bad idea. Given that this is not picked up and published by a massive crappy distributor with barrels of cash **cough**EA**cough** F2P offers the devs the ability to monetize what ever customer comes in and decides to take the game seriously. If it's well done, then I think that they'll do fine among the niche MechWarrior fans (MW before COD ruined MW ).
So - like other games (LotRO, D&DO, and many many others out there) that are F2P it's not a total loss.
