The cliche of the dispassionate scientist is compelling, but I don't think it's true. Emotion, and passion, are absolutely part of discovery.

But working hard, off on the fringes of what anyone knows, on subjects that perhaps very few even care about or would be comfortable discussing, can easily lead to a certain amount of social disconnection and awkwardness.
