"That these things are even remotely newsworthy leads me to one conclusion: Racism in America is dead. We had slavery, then we had Jim Crow — and now we have the occasional public utterance of a bad word. Real racism has been reduced to de minimis levels, while charges of racism seem to increase. I’ll vote for the first politician with the brass to say that “racism” should be dropped from our national dialogue."

    lol

So there are definitely people claiming it especially after Obama's election. Now, that's not to say the situation hasn't improved, it most definitely has, but to say racism is dead is just ignorant. And conservatives are the only ones who are claiming that, which is why I singled them out.
Not exactly what you were propagating.

It not my attitude that my experience is any more valid then yours. My point was its a different world from one to the other.. No downtown miami and fort lauderdale are NOTHING like philly, baltimore, dc, ny, st loius, or any other major city. Dont get me wrong they are slap ass full of people but the environment is completely different.

Thankfully it's not as bad as some of those places, but it's higher than the national average in crimes (all categories?) and worse in some parts than the Big Apple. Miami, when they are feeling frisky, tries to give Philly a contest for "worst place to visit". The location that my father and I used to work at is in an area that the police avoided purposely on account of the residents would routinely shoot at passing cruisers. SWAT Team and VICE Squad busts were common, as were fresh bullet holes in the sides and roof of the warehouse.

The point of this that just because one area is a larger urban area than others doesn't really make it a worse place regarding crime. New York is a huge urban population, squeezed into a small area. Yet their crime rate is lower than other areas far less dense. It's a combination of things (primarily composed of density, average education, average income). Where I went to middle school was very poor and very poorly educated (and drug ridden). That makes it pretty shitty.

Yeah, but it's still not St. Louis, so you wouldn't understand.

Dont take the posts from xav and myself about coral gables as im talking about crime rate. That was in fun on both sides i believe. My point is still the areas are completely different environments. Its actually kind of difficult to explain. I'll have to put some though into why they are so different and get back to you.

I always had a feeling of a shank on my ribs at any given time at the corner store.

No, sorry. In today's America, the word has no other meaning, just like "fag." Nobody uses this word because they happen to be using it, they use it out of hate and disdain.

New York is actually pretty far down the list for violent crime in the US. Unfortunately, wikipedia is down, so the nice sortable list that they post isn't available.
