During a recession, if you let a company fail that leads to the lose of over a million jobs, the recession is going to get much worse. It probably would have pushed us into a depression.

Well, good luck trying to find a real comparison. Find me a vital industry that is about go belly-up doing a recession or depression that manage to pull out ok. And by vital, I don't mean a stupid retailer, I mean actual production industry like manufacturing and would have cost over a million jobs if it went out of business. AmeriKing owned about 350 Burger Kings in 2002. There are over 8,000 in the United States alone. That's less than 5% of the total American stores that went through bankruptcy.
